HOHER IQ

🇬🇧 Nishi Uggalle

The number, and what it means

In May 2016 ITV News Granada reported that a 10-year-old from Audenshaw had an IQ higher than Einstein's, following a Mensa test score of 162. The Colombo Gazette carried the same story to Sri Lankan readers the same day, framing her as a Sri Lankan-born girl in Britain with a score above Einstein's.

That comparison deserves a caveat the headlines omitted. Einstein never sat an IQ test. The figure attributed to him is an estimate produced long after his death, so 'higher than Einstein' is a newspaper convention rather than a measurement. What is documented here is a reported score of 162 on a Mensa paper taken at 10, reported by the outlets named, not an established fact about her intelligence.

Child Genius

In 2019 she won Child Genius, the Channel 4 series in which British children compete across general knowledge, memory and specialist subjects over several rounds. The Manchester Evening News covered her progress under the local-paper framing of a girl showing her smarts; Eastern Eye reported on her mathematical performance during the run.

The programme is a competition rather than a test, which makes it a different kind of evidence from a Mensa score. It is scored under time pressure, in front of cameras, against other children selected for the same qualities, and it rewards composure as much as recall.

Two countries watching

The Sunday Times of Sri Lanka profiled her in March 2019 as a Sri Lankan whiz kid with a vision of girl power. Her parents, Neelanga and Shiromi Uggalle, are named in that coverage, and she was reported as an admirer of Stephen Hawking.

The dual coverage is a pattern that recurs across these records. A child in a Manchester suburb becomes a national story in the country of her birth, and the two press cultures write about her differently: the British outlets on the score and the television format, the Sri Lankan ones on migration, family and what she represents.

What is documented since

The published record used here stops in 2019. No source documents her secondary schooling, her examination results, a university place or anything about her life since the programme. She was 12 or 13 at the time of the final coverage.

That silence is the correct outcome for a child who competed on television and then went back to school, and this page does not fill it. Where searches promise updates on where she is now, they are extrapolating from the 2019 reporting.

How to read an IQ headline

Mensa's British test is an admissions instrument for a society, not a diagnostic. Scores on the supervised paper are capped, and the published figure is reported by the candidate or their family to the press rather than released by the organisation. That does not make a score meaningless. It does mean that a number in a headline is a reported result on one paper on one day, and that the ranking language wrapped around it, higher than Einstein, higher than Hawking, is journalism rather than psychometrics.

The more useful evidence in Uggalle's case is the competition. A child who scores highly on a single supervised test has demonstrated one thing. A child who then wins a multi-round national contest against other selected children, under television lighting and a clock, has demonstrated something that survives conditions a test paper does not impose. Both facts are in the record, and the second is the harder one to achieve.
