🇩🇪 Anori Laurin Benz

He won two world titles in one regatta — including the first ever awarded in a brand-new event

Under 19 world champion in the men's quadruple sculls and the inaugural mixed double sculls, Plovdiv, 8-9 August 2026

The 2026 World Rowing Under 19 Championships introduced two new events, and one of the first names in the record book belongs to a rower who was already a world champion by the time he raced it. At Plovdiv, Bulgaria, Anori Laurin Benz of Germany won the Under 19 men's quadruple sculls, and then, with Kaya Woelk, won the inaugural Under 19 mixed double sculls — a title that had never been awarded before and can never be won for the first time again. Two world titles, two boat classes, one regatta.

The quadruple sculls came first. Germany won it ahead of Poland and Denmark, with Great Britain, Italy and France completing the A final — Benz rowing alongside Philipp Pruefer, Jakob Gelsen and Christopher Tom Woerden. The quad is rowing's power event: four scullers, eight oars, the fastest boat on the water after the eight, and the class where a crew's ability to synchronise a very high rate over 2,000 metres is decisive. It is also the boat German junior programmes have historically been strongest in.

The mixed double, contested the following day, was something genuinely new. Under 19 mixed double sculls and mixed eight were both introduced at these championships, part of the sport's broader move towards mixed-gender events. Benz and Woelk took an early lead, and then had to defend it: World Rowing's report notes that the race tightened considerably towards the finish, with Italy's Roberta Romani and Elia Bressan coming through strongly. Germany held on. Hungary took bronze, ahead of Romania, Moldova and Ukraine.

Racing two boat classes at the same championships is not a scheduling convenience. It means additional heats, additional semifinals and additional finals inside four days, on a body that is still developing, and crews are usually protected from it. Doing it in a quad and a double compounds the load, because both are sculling boats at high rate over the full distance rather than one being a recovery event. Winning both is a conditioning statement as much as a technical one.

The inaugural aspect is a genuine and permanent distinction rather than a trivia note. First champions in a new Olympic-pathway boat class enter the record permanently, and the mixed double is expected to become a fixture of the junior programme. Germany's decision to enter athletes who were already committed to other events, and the fact that those athletes won, tells you how seriously the federation took a class nobody had a form guide for.

Germany finished at the top of the Under 19 medal table at Plovdiv jointly with Romania, and took both inaugural mixed titles — Benz and Woelk in the double, and a crew stroked by Charlotte Paulat in the mixed eight. Across the regatta, 660 athletes from 55 nations raced 14 boat classes, and sixteen crews were crowned world champions.

Two world titles in one junior regatta is rare, and two in different boat classes is rarer still, because it requires an athlete to race the full programme twice inside four days — heats, semifinals and finals in both — at a stage of physical development when coaches normally protect against exactly that. Benz did it in two high-rate sculling events, which is the most demanding combination available.

The honest framing of the second title is that a first edition of an event has no history behind it: there was no defending champion, no established form and no depth of national programmes built specifically for the mixed double, because the class did not exist. That makes the field less deep than the quad's, not less real — the same nations sent their best available athletes. The distinction is permanent regardless: the first name in a record book cannot be displaced by anyone who comes later.
