Terence Tao — The Mozart of Mathematics
Terence Tao is almost universally considered the greatest living mathematician and arguably the most cognitively gifted person alive. Born in 1975 in Adelaide, Australia, he was solving advanced calculus at age two. He earned a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad at 13 — the youngest in the competition's history. He received his PhD from Princeton at 21 and was a full professor at UCLA by 24.
Tao works across an extraordinary breadth of mathematical fields — harmonic analysis, partial differential equations, number theory, combinatorics, compressed sensing — making major contributions to each. His 2006 Fields Medal citation praised his "surprising and original" insights that connected distant areas of mathematics. Russian mathematician Grigori Perelman solved the Poincaré Conjecture in 2003 — one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems, the most celebrated unsolved problems in mathematics. His proof, which used differential geometry techniques known as Ricci flow, was a monumental achievement that the mathematical community spent years verifying before accepting as correct.
Perelman was awarded the Fields Medal in 2006 — and refused it, saying the recognition was unjust. He was offered the $1 million Millennium Prize — and refused that too. He has since withdrawn entirely from mathematical life and lives in near-poverty in St. Petersburg with his mother.
Noam Chomsky — Master of Mind and Language
Noam Chomsky occupies a unique category: he is the only person in history to have founded a major scientific field (generative linguistics / transformational grammar) while simultaneously becoming one of the most cited and controversial political intellectuals of the 20th century. His 1957 work "Syntactic Structures" transformed linguistics by arguing that the human capacity for language is innate — wired into the brain's architecture.
