Polymath Definition and Examples — Da Vinci to Modern Day

A polymath is a person whose knowledge and expertise spans many different fields — not merely broadly educated, but genuinely expert and often original in multiple disciplines. The word comes from the Greek "polymathes" (πολυμαθής) meaning "having learned much." A true polymath doesn't just know a lot; they contribute new knowledge across multiple domains.

The declining possibility of polymathism in the modern era is real but overstated. As total knowledge grows, the breadth available to any one person shrinks relative to the whole — but the ability to connect knowledge across fields remains enormously valuable. None of these fully parallel the historical polymaths — the total volume of knowledge in any single field today exceeds what any individual can master.
