The Scope of the Notebooks
Written in mirror script (right-to-left) in Italian, the notebooks were largely inaccessible after Leonardo's death. They were dispersed across Europe and many were lost. Surviving codices include the Codex Atlanticus (Milan), Codex Leicester (owned by Bill Gates since 1994), Codex Arundel (London), and the Codex on the Flight of Birds (Turin).
Flying Machines
Leonardo sketched ornithopters, hang gliders, a helical aerial screw (the conceptual ancestor of the helicopter), and a parachute. His parachute design was successfully tested in 2000 — 500 years after he drew it — and found aerodynamically sound. His helicopter concept was unworkable with human muscle power but conceptually correct.
Human Anatomy
Leonardo dissected over 30 human corpses and produced anatomical drawings of unprecedented accuracy — the heart's four chambers, the spine's curvature, the fetus in the womb, and the mechanics of the eye. Many of his findings were not matched by medical science for another century.
Engineering and Physics
He designed ball bearings, a solar power concentrator, a water-powered alarm clock, a robotic knight, and early designs for a tank and a submarine. He also wrote on optics, wave motion, geology, and the age of fossils — correctly proposing that marine fossils on mountains indicated that those mountains were once seabeds.
