Written at Lightning Speed: Masterpieces Finished in Days
The Messiah in about three weeks, a novel in 26 days, a symphony in four: the fastest great works ever made.
Some masterpieces gestate for decades — Goethe carried Faust for sixty years. This list is about the opposite phenomenon: immortal work produced at a sprint, under deadlines that would terrify a journalist. The speeds below are documented, and they remain barely believable.

George Frideric Handel — Messiah in about 24 days
In the late summer of 1741, Handel filled 259 pages of score in roughly three and a half weeks, barely leaving his room. The "Hallelujah" chorus — the most famous choral music in existence — was part of a first draft written faster than most composers copy. Servants' tales of the composer weeping over the manuscript may be embroidery; the dated manuscript itself is not.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart — the "Linz" Symphony in about 4 days
Arriving in Linz in late 1783, Mozart discovered a concert had been announced and he had no symphony with him. His letter to his father survives: "I am writing a new symphony at breakneck speed." Symphony No. 36 — a full, polished, half-hour masterpiece — was performed on 4 November. His whole catalogue moved at this pace: the Don Giovanni overture was famously written the night before the premiere.
Franz Schubert — up to 8 songs in a single day
In 1815, the eighteen-year-old Schubert wrote well over a hundred songs; on one October day he set as many as eight poems to music. Erlkönig, by the account of friends, was composed in a single afternoon burst — the most famous song in the German language, written before dinner.
Fyodor Dostoevsky — The Gambler in 26 days
Trapped by a predatory contract that would forfeit the rights to all his works if he missed the deadline, Dostoevsky dictated an entire novel in under a month in 1866 — to a young stenographer, Anna Snitkina, whom he married months later. The novel about compulsive risk was itself the winning bet of his life.
Robert Louis Stevenson — Jekyll and Hyde in about 3 days (twice)
By his family's account, Stevenson wrote the first draft in around three days of fever, burned it after his wife's criticism — and wrote the version we know in roughly three more. Sixty thousand words a week, from a man coughing blood; scholarly caution notwithstanding, the manuscript's speed is not in doubt.
Gioachino Rossini — The Barber of Seville in under 3 weeks
Rossini claimed thirteen days; contemporaries allowed perhaps twenty. Either way, the greatest comic opera in the Italian repertoire was assembled faster than its own rehearsals. Rossini, the story goes, composed in bed, and once — rather than get up for a dropped page — simply wrote a new duet.
Jack Kerouac — On the Road in 3 weeks
In April 1951, on a 120-foot scroll of taped-together paper, fuelled by coffee, Kerouac typed the defining novel of the Beat generation in twenty days. Often forgotten: he then revised it for six years before publication — the sprint got the road down; the craft came after.

What speed proves
Every work here was preceded by years of invisible preparation — Handel had forty operas behind him; Mozart had been composing for a quarter-century at 27. Deadline genius is stored genius, released all at once. The sprint is real; so is the decade of training behind it.
