Four years of nanotechnology research on citrus disease — and a ticket to Europe's top science contest

Citrus greening has cost Florida most of its orange industry. The bacteria that cause it live inside the tree's vascular system, where sprays cannot reach and where infection is invisible until the fruit drops. Moitri Santra attends Oviedo High School in Seminole County, Florida — roughly an hour's drive from the citrus groves that once made the state's agricultural reputation and that have since been devastated by Huanglongbing, commonly called citrus greening. Florida's orange production has collapsed by more than ninety percent from its peak, and the disease is now established across the American Sun Belt and much of the citrus-growing world. It is one of the most economically consequential unsolved problems in plant pathology.

The scientific difficulty is specific. The bacterium associated with citrus greening colonises the phloem — the tissue that transports sugars through the tree — which places it beyond the reach of surface sprays. Oxytetracycline, a well-established antibiotic, works against it in the laboratory. Getting a therapeutic dose into the phloem of a mature tree, at a cost and labour intensity a grower can actually sustain across thousands of acres, is where the field has been stuck.

Santra's project attacks both halves of the problem simultaneously. The full title of the work presented at ISEF 2026 describes it precisely: the development of an industrially viable oxytetracycline nano-carrier paired with a microneedle-based detection system, designated OXYCHECK2, for the management of citrus and stone fruit disease. The nano-carrier addresses delivery — encapsulating the antibiotic so it can be transported into plant tissue efficiently. The microneedle system addresses diagnosis — sampling the tree directly rather than waiting for visible decline.

The word doing the most work in that title is 'industrially viable'. A great deal of published nanotechnology in agriculture is elegant at bench scale and useless at field scale, because the synthesis is too expensive, the materials are not stable in sunlight and rain, or the application method requires per-tree attention no grower can afford. Explicitly framing the design around industrial viability is an unusually mature research instinct for a high-school project, and it reflects the fact that this was not a one-season effort.

It was, by Santra's own project documentation, Year 4. Longitudinal science-fair projects — where a student returns to the same problem across multiple seasons, iterating on results rather than starting fresh — are the closest analogue to a graduate research programme available to a teenager. They are also comparatively rare, because most students switch topics as their interests change. Four years on one agricultural pathology problem indicates something closer to a research agenda than a competition entry.

The 76th Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair was held in Phoenix, Arizona in May 2026, with more than 1,700 finalists and over $7 million in awards distributed. Santra received the EU Contest for Young Scientists Award, which carries a specific and unusual prize: the right to represent Regeneron ISEF at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists, held in September 2026 in Kiel, Germany. EUCYS is the European Commission's flagship competition for young researchers, and the ISEF delegate slot is awarded to a project judged to have both scientific merit and international relevance.

That international framing fits the science. Citrus greening is not an American problem; it moves wherever citrus grows, and it has already reached Brazil, China and the Mediterranean basin. Stone fruit — peaches, plums, cherries — face their own bacterial and fungal pressures that a delivery-plus-detection platform could address. A method that makes in-plant antibiotic delivery economical at scale would matter to growers on four continents, which is exactly the kind of reach EUCYS selects for.

Detection may prove to be the more important half. Every model of citrus greening management agrees on one point: the disease is manageable if caught early and effectively untreatable once symptoms are visible, because by then the tree's vascular system is extensively colonised. A microneedle patch that samples a tree in the field, cheaply and without laboratory processing, would change the economics of orchard surveillance — turning a reactive, tree-by-tree loss into a screening problem. That is the ambition behind a project that a Florida teenager has now spent four years refining.

Moitri Santra matters because the target is one of the most economically destructive unsolved problems in modern agriculture. Citrus greening has erased the overwhelming majority of Florida's orange production and continues to spread through citrus regions worldwide. The bottleneck is not that no antibiotic works — it is that no one has made in-plant delivery affordable at orchard scale, and no one has made early detection cheap enough to run as routine surveillance. This project attacks both at once.

The second reason is methodological. Four consecutive research seasons on a single problem, with 'industrially viable' written into the design brief, is how professional applied research works and how almost no high-school science fair project works. The EUCYS delegate slot is awarded on scientific merit and international relevance; both were earned here by iteration rather than by a single clever idea.
