Solo, unsupported, unassisted
Each of those three words is a rule. Solo means no companion. Unsupported means no resupply: every calorie for 51 days is dragged from the coast. Unassisted means no kite or sail, so the only propulsion is the skier.
Tordeur started at Hercules Inlet, the usual coastal starting point for the full route, and covered 1,130 kilometres. He was 27 years and 40 days old on arrival. Guinness World Records published the achievement on 14 November 2019 and lists the category as youngest person to ski to the South Pole unsupported, male.
What a 115-kilo sled means
The pulk weighed 115 kilograms when he set off, most of it food and fuel. That is heavier than the person dragging it, across sastrugi and soft snow, uphill for much of the route, because the Pole sits on a plateau nearly three kilometres above sea level.
The load lightens as the food is eaten, which is the grim arithmetic of polar travel: the hardest days are the first, when the sled is heaviest and the body is not yet adapted. Fifty-one days is a fast time for that route on foot.
The training that preceded it
Tordeur did not arrive at Antarctica untested. He prepared in Greenland and Svalbard, the two standard training grounds for polar travel, and ran the Marathon des Sables, the multi-day foot race across the Moroccan desert.
The pattern is common among modern polar travellers: cold-weather apprenticeships on smaller ice caps, plus endurance events that test whether a person can keep moving while depleted. The Antarctic attempt is the examination, not the course.
The record has since fallen
In January 2024 Pierre Hedan reached the Pole under the same rules at 26, taking the youngest-person record from Tordeur after five years.
That is how age records work, and it is why this page states the achievement rather than the title as a permanent possession. The 1,130 kilometres, the 51 days and the 115-kilogram sled do not change; the ranking does. Very few people attempt the full coastal route to the Pole under these rules in any season, and fewer finish it, so a change of record holder usually means one more person has joined a list that runs to a few dozen names rather than that the standard has moved.
