Sants, Barcelona, 2023. The Sants International Open is one of Europe's most competitive chess opens — a strong field, multiple grandmasters, players from across the world hunting for norms and rating points in the heat of a Spanish summer. Aronyak Ghosh, a nineteen-year-old from Kolkata, finishes fourth overall. But the placement matters less than what the result means: he has produced a Grandmaster-level performance. His first GM norm is secured. The highest-rated International Master in Indian chess history has taken his first step toward the title that will complete the journey.

Aronyak Ghosh was born in Kolkata on December 6, 2003, into a city with a chess tradition older and richer than most players from outside India realize. Kolkata — formerly Calcutta — produced Dibyendu Barua, India's second-ever grandmaster. It produced Surya Shekhar Ganguly, five-time national champion. It is a city where chess clubs operate with institutional seriousness, where junior tournaments are contested at a level that would challenge players from any other country. Growing up in Kolkata is growing up inside a chess ecosystem.

He earned the International Master title in 2019, at fifteen years old — young enough to draw attention, accomplished enough to set records. His FIDE rating climbed steadily through the following years, reaching a peak that chess statisticians noticed: at 2533, Aronyak Ghosh became the highest-rated International Master in the history of Indian chess. In a country that was producing grandmasters by the dozen, he had reached a height no non-GM Indian had ever reached while still technically below the title threshold. It was a rating that made the absence of the GM title feel like a formality — the norms needed to close the gap.

"Aronyak Ghosh — the highest rated IM in Indian chess at 2533 — is playing chess that regularly beats grandmasters. The title is a question of when, not whether."

— Chess Chest analysis of Aronyak Ghosh's rating peak

In 2023, he finished third at the Indian National Chess Championship — a field that includes India's top grandmasters, players rated well above 2600, and some of the deepest chess talent on the planet. Third place in that company, without the GM title, is an extraordinary result. It is the kind of tournament performance that confirms a player's strength more conclusively than any single game. He was, by any measure, playing at Grandmaster level before he had the title to prove it.

His second GM norm came in 2024 at the Annemasse Masters — a French tournament where he won the event outright on tiebreaks. Winning an international open, rather than merely finishing high enough for a norm, is a different kind of statement. It says that on those days, in that field, you were the best player in the room. Aronyak was. The third norm, when it comes, will close the chapter on a remarkable IM career and begin something new.

"Aronyak Ghosh wins the Annemasse Masters on tiebreaks — his second GM-norm performance and a tournament victory that announced him as a consistent force in European opens."

— ChessBase India, reporting on Annemasse Masters 2024

The FIDE World Cup 2025 provided his most prominent international debut. The World Cup is a knockout event featuring the world's best players — a place where an upset in the first round against an established grandmaster makes global chess headlines. Aronyak defeated GM Mateusz Bartel of Poland in his first-round match — a victory that required accurate preparation, sustained calculation under pressure, and the confidence to impose his ideas against a more experienced opponent. He was eliminated in the second round by Levon Aronian, one of the greatest players alive. But first-round upsets in World Cups are not accidents. They are evidence.

West Bengal chess is alive. Mitrabha Guha, its 9th grandmaster, won the Commonwealth Rapid gold and the National Blitz title. Aronyak Ghosh, the state's next grandmaster in waiting, defeated a grandmaster at the FIDE World Cup at twenty-one. The lineage from Barua to Ganguly continues — and it is accelerating.

Why This Matters

India counts its grandmasters faster than any other nation in chess history. But the pipeline behind those grandmasters — the highly-rated International Masters waiting to convert their final norms — is equally revealing. Aronyak Ghosh was the highest-rated IM India had ever produced. That number — 2533 — represents an extraordinary concentration of chess strength in a player who had not yet technically reached the top title. His first World Cup, his Indian National Championship podium finish, his European tournament wins: they confirm that when the third norm comes, it will have been earned through chess of a quality that the title merely names. The label "prodigy" understates what he already is.
