Understanding the IQ Bell Curve
IQ scores follow a normal distribution — the famous bell curve. The test is designed so that the average score is exactly 100, with a standard deviation of 15 points. This means:

What Does a Genius IQ Actually Mean?
An IQ of 140 means you think faster, hold more information in working memory simultaneously, make more abstract connections, and learn new material more quickly than about 99.6% of the population. At this level, individuals typically master academic subjects with minimal effort, see patterns others miss, and are capable of original intellectual contributions in their fields.

IQ 160 and Above: The Ultra-High Stratum
Beyond IQ 160, we enter territory where conventional tests struggle to differentiate accurately. Standard IQ tests like the WAIS-IV have a ceiling around 160. Scores above this require specialized tests such as the Mega Test or the Titan Test, designed by members of high-IQ societies like Mensa, Intertel, and the Triple Nine Society.
At IQ 160 and above, the changes in cognitive architecture appear qualitative rather than just quantitative. These individuals often report thinking in ways that are difficult to communicate to others — seeing entire systems of thought simultaneously, having near-perfect recall of complex information, and experiencing ideas as vivid multidimensional structures.
IQ 200+: The Prodigy Zone
Scores above 200 are almost universally estimates rather than direct measurements. The most famous examples include William James Sidis (estimated 250–300), Terence Tao (tested 225–230), and Marilyn vos Savant (recorded 228 at age 10).
Does IQ Define Genius?
Not entirely. Psychologists and neuroscientists increasingly understand that what we call "genius" — transformative creative output that advances human knowledge — requires more than raw cognitive speed. It also requires deep domain knowledge, intrinsic motivation, the ability to tolerate ambiguity, and in many cases, the willingness to devote decades of focused effort to a problem.
Many individuals with IQs above 160 never produce work of genius-level significance, while some transformative creators throughout history showed no particular talent on standardized tests.
