The 1937 final

Life ran a picture feature on the Washington spelling bee in its issue of 14 June 1937, at a time when the magazine's photographic reporting was reshaping American journalism. The Kalona News in Iowa carried the result three days later in plainer terms: the spelling champion had won a $500 prize.

Beckley was 14 and from Louisville, Kentucky. The runner-up, Betty Grunstra, was eliminated on plebeian - a Latin borrowing whose ei trips spellers who reason from the sound. Beckley then took the title on promiscuous.

Neither report describes how many rounds the final took or how large the field was. What they fix is the essential sequence: a runner-up eliminated on a Latin borrowing, a champion who then spelled the word in front of her, and a cheque that in 1937 was worth more than most of the adults in the hall earned in a season.

A word that has moved

Promiscuous in 1937 meant, first of all, mixed or indiscriminate - a promiscuous heap of objects, a promiscuous crowd. Its narrower modern sense, applied to sexual behaviour, was present but secondary, and it has since largely displaced the older meaning.

That drift is a reminder of what the bee's word lists actually record: English at a particular moment. Champions are tested on the dictionary as it stands, and the dictionary keeps moving underneath them.

The first blind finalist

Third place in 1937 went to Angelo Mangieri, the first blind speller to reach that stage of the national bee. A competitor who cannot read the word list studies entirely by ear and by Braille, and spells aloud without the visual memory that most champions describe relying on.

It is the kind of first that the bee produced regularly in its early decades and rarely recorded well. The 1937 final is documented here by a photo essay and a small Iowa newspaper, and between them those two sources preserve a result that the competition's own history keeps only in a list.

The bee has since built formal accommodations into its rules, and blind and partially sighted spellers compete every year. Mangieri's placing in 1937 came before any of that existed, in a competition run entirely for spellers who could read the lists in print.

What $500 meant in 1937

The United States in 1937 was still inside the Depression. Five hundred dollars was a substantial sum - several months of wages in many households - and for a 14-year-old it was an amount that could change a family's year, not only her own.

The prize scale is part of why the newspapers took the bee seriously enough to fund it. A sponsoring paper that sent a champion to Washington was buying a story its readers would follow, and the prize money made the competition worth following.

What is documented, and what is not

Documented: the 1937 championship, the winning word promiscuous, her age of 14, Louisville, the $500 prize, the runner-up Betty Grunstra's miss on plebeian, and Angelo Mangieri's third place as the first blind finalist.

Not documented in the sources used here: her school, her family, the number of rounds, which newspaper sponsored her, and anything about her life after June 1937. The two surviving reports are both from the week of the final.
