The 2023 final
Britain's Got Talent series 16 was judged by Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and Bruno Tonioli, and reached a final of eleven acts in early June 2023. The comedian Viggo Venn, 33, won it with 22.5 per cent of the public vote.
Olivia Lynes, billed as an 11-year-old musical theatre singer, finished ninth with 4.2 per cent. The acts above her included a 13-year-old contemporary dancer in second place, a 13-year-old close-up magician in third and a 13-year-old opera singer in fourth. Lynes was the youngest finalist of the series by two years.
What reaching a final requires
Britain's Got Talent auditions thousands of acts a year. The panel cuts them to a few dozen, those are distributed across a week of semi-finals, and a public vote in each semi-final decides who goes through, usually with the judges choosing between second and third place. Only the surviving handful reach a final decided entirely by the country.
Two filters, then, stand between an audition and that stage: a professional panel and a national vote. Lynes cleared both at eleven. The ninth-place finish records how the final night's votes fell; it does not measure what it took to be there.
The numbers ITV published
The broadcaster released the full 2023 vote table on its official site on 4 June. Behind Venn's 22.5 per cent came Lillianna Clifton on 13.1, Cillian O'Connor on 11.8, Malakai Bayoh on 11.3, Musa Motha on 10.9 and the Ghetto Kids on 10.1. The singer Amy Lou took 5.8 per cent and the opera singer Travis George 4.4, just ahead of Lynes on 4.2.
Published percentages are unusual in entertainment television and they are the reason the figures on this page are exact. They also show how compressed the lower half of the final was: fewer than two points separated seventh place from ninth.
Musical theatre on a talent show
Musical theatre is one of the few disciplines a child can present on a variety stage without the act being a novelty. The songs are written for adult voices and adult stories, and a young performer is judged against the original rather than graded for age. That is a harsh comparison to invite at eleven.
What Lynes actually sang is not recorded in either source used for this page. Neither the ITV vote release nor the series results table names repertoire, and this page does not supply a title it cannot verify.
What is documented and what is not
Documented by ITV's official vote release and the series results table: her age of 11, her billing as a musical theatre singer, her place in the 2023 final, her 4.2 per cent share, the winner Viggo Venn and the full order of the eleven finalists.
Not documented in these sources: her date of birth, her home town, her school, her training, the songs she performed, whether a Golden Buzzer was involved at any stage, and anything about her since June 2023. The results table used here does not record Golden Buzzer recipients for that series, so no claim about one appears on this page.
