What a perfect score means
The olympiad sets six problems, each marked out of seven. They are proofs, not calculations: the marks follow the completeness of the argument, and a contestant who reaches a correct conclusion by an incomplete route is marked down for the gap.
Papers are assessed by coordination, in which examiners and team leaders go through each written solution together. Forty-two out of forty-two means six proofs were read by people whose job was to find the weakness in them, and none was found.

The group included all four Chinese contestants — Shuwen Hu, Lai Yuan, Sihan Su and Yiran Qiu — along with Fidan Garayeva of Azerbaijan, Maria Drencheva of Bulgaria, Nogah Friedman of Israel, Polina Henyk of Ukraine, Isabella Zhu and Vivian Loh of the United States and Xiangyue Nan of Australia.
When fourteen contestants clear every problem, the scoreboard cannot rank them. The top of the 2023 table is a tie, and the individual order that usually decides an olympiad simply does not exist for that group.
The field in Slovenia
Roughly fifty countries took part in 2023, most fielding teams of four, which puts the field at around two hundred contestants. Every one of them had come through a national selection to be in the hall, so the paper was being sat by each country's strongest school-age mathematicians.
