Max Dowman was born on 31 December 2009 in Chelmsford, Essex, into a family of Arsenal supporters. He played in the youth set-up at Billericay Town before joining Arsenal's academy in 2015, at the age of eight. There is a thread of club history running through the family: George Male, the Arsenal full-back who played either side of the Second World War, shares a common ancestor with him four generations back. By September 2023, at thirteen, Dowman was already playing for Arsenal's under-18 side — four full age groups above his own.

His first records were set in youth football, and they arrived quickly. On 19 September 2024, aged 14 years, eight months and 19 days, he scored against Atalanta in the UEFA Youth League to become the youngest goalscorer in that competition's history. Three months later, still fourteen, he became the youngest player ever to appear in Premier League 2, the reserve division of English football, and began training with Arsenal's first team. Arsenal youth coach Gustavo Oliveira has publicly compared him to Kaká; scouting reports single out his delivery from set pieces, which he took at youth level.

He made his senior debut in a pre-season friendly against AC Milan in Singapore on 23 July 2025, aged fifteen. His competitive Premier League debut followed on 23 August 2025, when he replaced a teammate in the 64th minute against Leeds United at 15 years and 235 days — the second-youngest appearance in league history, behind his Arsenal teammate Ethan Nwaneri. He won a penalty in the third minute of stoppage time that produced Arsenal's fifth goal in a 5-0 win. Because of his age he travels chaperoned and, under Football Association safeguarding rules, does not change in the main dressing room.

The records then came in a run. On 29 October 2025 he became Arsenal's youngest ever starter, named in the XI for an EFL Cup fourth-round tie against Brighton at 15 years and 302 days, breaking goalkeeper Jack Porter's club record by more than four months. He played 71 minutes of a 2-0 win before Bukayo Saka replaced him. Six days later, on 4 November, he came on in the 72nd minute of a 3-0 win at Slavia Prague to become the youngest player ever to appear in the Champions League, at 15 years and 308 days, surpassing Youssoufa Moukoko.

The afternoon that made him a household name was 14 March 2026. Dowman replaced Martín Zubimendi in the 74th minute against Everton with Arsenal on course to drop points in a title race. In the 89th minute his deep cross found Piero Hincapié at the back post, and Hincapié turned the ball across goal for Viktor Gyökeres to convert. Then, with Everton committing everyone forward and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford upfield for a corner, Dowman won a loose ball ahead of Vitalii Mykolenko, went past Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, carried it half the length of the pitch and finished into the empty net.

At 16 years and 73 days the goal made him the youngest scorer in Premier League history, beating James Vaughan's 2005 record by 197 days, and Arsenal's youngest ever scorer. The 2-0 win moved Arsenal ten points clear at the top of the table. Two more records followed within ten weeks. On 19 May 2026 Arsenal were confirmed as champions and Dowman, at 16 years and 139 days, became the youngest Premier League title winner ever, ahead of Phil Foden. On 24 May, on the final day at Crystal Palace, he made his first league start at 16 years and 144 days, eclipsing Jose Baxter's 2008 mark.

Internationally he has represented England at youth level since 2024. He started all three of England's matches at the 2025 UEFA European Under-17 Championship and scored the opening goal in a 4-2 win over the Czech Republic. He debuted for the under-19 side in a 2-0 win over Ukraine at the Pinatar Arena on 3 September 2025, and later became the youngest goalscorer in that team's history in a 7-0 win against Wales, breaking a record set by Ryan Sessegnon in 2016. On 30 January 2026 Arsenal announced a pre-contract agreement that converts to professional terms on his seventeenth birthday.

One correction is worth carrying, because aggregators have repeatedly got it wrong: Dowman is not the youngest player ever to appear in the Premier League. That record belongs to Ethan Nwaneri, his own teammate. Dowman is the second-youngest debutant, and the youngest scorer, youngest starter and youngest title winner. The distinction matters because the four records he does hold are already extraordinary, and because the discipline of getting the claim right is what separates a record from a rumour — the standard applied to every entry in this index.
