The 1947 bee

TIME covered the final in its education pages under the title Spelldown. Pollard was 14, from Thomaston in west-central Georgia, and had been taught in a one-room school - a building in which pupils of every age share a single teacher and a single room, still common in the rural American South of the 1940s.

Her winning word was chlorophyll, the pigment that makes plants green: Greek in origin, with the trap in the double l and the y. The runner-up was Sonya Rodolfo, a Philippine-born girl competing from Chicago, which made the 1947 final a contest between two children whose classrooms could hardly have been more different.

The second attempt

Pollard had reached the national bee in 1946 and finished sixth. Returning the following year and winning is the standard shape of a spelling championship: the competition rewards a second run, when the nerves are known and the word lists have had another year of study behind them.

For Georgia it was a first. No speller from the state had taken the national title before, which is why the result was carried at home as a state story as well as a national one.

What she did afterwards

Her obituary in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, published under her married name, Mattie Lou Cato, records a working life spent with the Defense Department and the National Park Service. She died on 10 January 2006 in Norcross, Georgia, at 73.

The obituary is the reason this page can go past the bee at all. Most champions of the 1940s disappear from the record entirely; a published obituary that names the 1947 title is an unusually complete closing entry.

A one-room school and a national stage

The detail that made the story in 1947 is the same one that makes it now. A child educated in a single room, in a farming county, out-spelled the products of city school systems with libraries, specialist teachers and newspaper coaching programmes.

It is also a reminder of what the bee actually measures. Preparation for it is done largely alone, with a dictionary, which is a form of study that a one-room school does not disadvantage.

The bee of 1947 was also a smaller and more provincial event than the modern competition. Fields were counted in dozens, sponsoring newspapers covered their own champions, and TIME's brief report was close to the limit of national attention any winner received. That a Georgia farm county produced the champion was, in that context, a result the state remembered for decades.
