Twelve years of playing at thirteen
The arithmetic in the Global News report is the striking part. At 13, Coetzee had been playing for twelve years, which places her start at around the age of one. She came to it through her older sisters: they began lessons first, and their teacher handed the youngest child a viola to practise on.
By April 2018 the routine was fixed at six days a week, two to four hours a day. The report describes her place in Mount Royal University's honours class for young artists as a programme intended for extraordinary young talents accelerating at a pace beyond their age.
What her teacher said
Johanne Perron, named as one of her personal teachers, gave Global News the assessment that carried the story. "Technically she's probably the level of some university students," Perron said, adding that she believed Coetzee "will have a great place in the music world in the future."
That is a teacher's judgement rather than a competition result, and it should be read as one. The report notes that Coetzee had won numerous awards but names none of them and gives no dates, which leaves the strongest documented claim about her standing as Perron's sentence.
The High River concert
The occasion for the profile was a concert on Saturday 28 April 2018 at High River United Church, in High River, Alberta, south of Calgary. It closed the High River Gift of Music Society's season, began at 7.30pm, and paired Coetzee with another young musician from Edmonton.
Community concert series of this kind are the practical proving ground for young string players in Canada: a full-length programme, a paying audience of a few hundred, and no allowance made for age. The report does not list the works she played.
In her own words
Coetzee gave Global News two lines that explain the practice schedule better than the schedule does. "Challenge is a privilege for me, because it makes you better and it's where you learn," she said. "That's what keeps me going."
It is a conventional thing for a young musician to say and an unconventional thing to have earned at 13. Twelve years of daily work is what sits behind it, and the report frames the sentence that way rather than as a slogan.
What is documented — and what is not
One source underpins this record: a Global News report dated 28 April 2018. It establishes her age, the length of her playing career, her programme at Mount Royal University, her practice routine, her teacher and the concert. It does not give her date of birth, so the birth year attached to her is derived from her being 13 that April.
The awards are the notable gap. Global News says she had won numerous prizes but names none, so no competition record for her can be stated here. Nothing in the source describes what she did after 2018 — conservatory, competitions, orchestras or otherwise — and no later reporting on her has been located for this entry. That is an absence of information, not evidence that the career stalled.
