🇺🇸 Kara Fan

Nano Particle Wound Care

The official list of past winners of the 3M Young Scientist Challenge records one name for each year. Against 2019 it records Kara Fan, and it titles the winning project Nano Particle Wound Care. That is the whole of the entry.

The research record behind this page adds the purpose: a liquid bandage built around nanoparticles, aimed at cutting how often antibiotics are prescribed for minor wounds. That framing does not appear on the competition's listing as read, so it is carried here as the research record's description rather than as the competition's own.

What is claimed, and what is not

A dressing that removes the reason to prescribe is a different kind of intervention from a new drug: it acts on the decision rather than on the bacterium. That is the logic of the project as described, and it is a reasonable line of attack for a middle-school science entry.

It is also as far as the evidence goes. Nothing in the sources used here names the nanoparticle, describes the formulation, reports a test against any organism, gives a result, or records any trial, review or regulatory step. No medical claim about the bandage can be drawn from this record, and none is made on this page. The competition recorded a judging outcome, not a clinical finding.

One winner a year

America's Top Young Scientist is awarded once a year, to one entrant, in a national competition for middle-school students. There are no categories and no shared first place, which is what gives the title its weight: it identifies a single project out of a country-wide field for that year.

The competition publishes the verdict and stops there. The listing is therefore authoritative about who won and what the project was called, and silent about the winner herself, which is the ordinary pattern for student science prizes.

The list around 2019

The same page places 2019 in a run of health and detection projects. Gitanjali Rao won in 2017 with Tethys, a lead detector for drinking water, and Rishab Jain in 2018 with an artificial-intelligence method for pancreatic cancer radiotherapy. Anika Chebrolu followed in 2020 with molecular docking work on a COVID-19 antiviral.

Before that stretch the winners had been building energy and environmental machines: Peyton Robertson's salt-water sandbag in 2013, Sahil Doshi's PolluCell in 2014, Hannah Herbst's ocean energy probe in 2015 and Maanasa Mendu's piezoelectric wind device in 2016. After 2020 came Sarah Park's Spark Care+ in 2021, Leanne Fan's phototherapy headphones in 2022, Heman Bekele's melanoma-treating soap in 2023, Sirish Subash's pesticide detector in 2024 and Kevin Tang's fall-detection system in 2025.

Two winners named Fan

Three years after Kara Fan, the same listing records Leanne Fan as the 2022 winner, for Finsen Headphones, a machine-learning and phototherapy device for middle-ear infections. The shared surname has caused the two to be linked in casual retellings of the competition.

No source used here states any relation between them, and the research record for this page marks the question as unverified. The two entries sit on the same list and nothing more than that is established. Similarly, the research record places Kara Fan in San Diego, California, drawing on a summary of the competition rather than on the winners listing, which gives no home town at all.

What is documented — and what is not

The firm facts are narrow and solid: the 2019 title of America's Top Young Scientist, awarded by the 3M Young Scientist Challenge, for a project the competition calls Nano Particle Wound Care.

The gaps are wide. No age or date of birth, no grade, school or photograph. No chemistry, no testing, no efficacy figure and no prize amount. No quotation from her, no statement from a family member, and no reporting on what happened to the bandage or to Fan after 2019. Those blanks are left blank here deliberately.
