🇺🇸 John Capehart

Smaragdine, and distichous

The St. Petersburg Times gave the 1961 final its headline from the word that decided it for the runner-up: "Who Says Johnny Can't Spell? Try 'Distichous'!". Mary Lukes missed distichous — a botanical term for leaves arranged in two vertical ranks — and Capehart then took the title on smaragdine.

The Tuscaloosa News reported the family angle the following day under the headline "F-a-m-i-l-y takes bow with spelling champ". His brother Mark had reached the same national finals in 1958, placing twelfth, which puts the Capeharts among the bee's recurring families.

From Tulsa to Dallas

A tribute published in Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings in October 2011 sets out the career that followed: thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, with work in heart and lung transplantation. The record here adds that he trained under Richard Lower, one of the pioneers of cardiac transplantation.

Transplant surgery in that generation was not an established specialty but a frontier. Surgeons who entered it in the 1970s and 1980s were operating on patients who had no other option, with survival statistics that improved year by year largely because of what those operations taught.

Oklahoma's first

He was the state's first national champion. The record used here notes that Oklahoma has produced only two in total; the second, Michael Kerpan, also from Tulsa, won four years later in 1965.

Two champions from one city in five years is not coincidence. It reflects a strong regional bee, a committed newspaper sponsor and, most likely, a group of schools that had worked out how to prepare competitors — the same local ecosystem that produced the Beacon Journal's five champions in Ohio.

What is documented — and what is not

Documented: a win at the 1961 National Spelling Bee on smaragdine, aged twelve, from Tulsa; runner-up Mary Lukes eliminated on distichous; a brother, Mark, who placed twelfth in 1958; status as Oklahoma's first national champion; and a 2011 tribute in Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings describing a career in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery and transplantation in Dallas.

Not documented in the sources used here: his date of birth; his school; his medical school and training dates; and what occasioned the 2011 tribute — whether it marked a retirement, an honour or a death. That last point is stated openly rather than guessed at, and no claim about his current status is made on this page.

Why the bee keeps producing doctors

The overlap between spelling champions and medicine is the strongest pattern in this collection. Several explanations fit. The bee's advanced word lists are dense with medical and scientific vocabulary, so a serious competitor spends years inside the language of the profession. The preparation itself — long, systematic, unglamorous — resembles the first years of medical training more than it resembles anything else a twelve-year-old does.

And the competition selects for a particular nerve: the ability to work carefully while being watched, with no second attempt. Surgery asks for the same thing under considerably higher stakes. The line from a Washington microphone in 1961 to a Dallas operating theatre is longer than a page like this can trace, but it is not a strange one.
