🇺🇸 Dorothy Greenwald

Seventeenth one year, national champion the next

National Spelling Bee champion, June 1932, on the word invulnerable

Dorothy Greenwald came seventeenth at the 1931 National Spelling Bee. She returned in 1932 and won it, at 13, on the word invulnerable. She was from Muscatine, Iowa, though the wire copy that carried her victory across the country called her a Des Moines girl. She died in Muscatine in 2008.

The second run

A seventeenth place is a thorough defeat at national level: it means elimination in the early or middle rounds, in front of an audience, with a year to think about it. Greenwald went back to the dictionary and returned the following June as champion.

That pattern - a chastening first attempt followed by a win - recurs across the bee's history often enough to be the usual route rather than the exception. The competition rewards the second visit, when the format is familiar and the nerves are known quantities.

The 1932 final

The Associated Press report on 8 June 1932 announced the result under a headline naming a Des Moines girl; the Evening Independent a week later called her simply an Iowa girl. She was from Muscatine, on the Mississippi in the east of the state, and the discrepancy reflects the sponsoring paper's city rather than her home.

Her winning word was invulnerable. The runner-up, Kenneth Cecil of Kentucky, was eliminated on interchangeably - a word whose difficulty lies in its length and its unstressed middle, where the vowels give a speller no help at all.

Reading old wire copy

The Des Moines and Muscatine confusion is worth flagging, because it is the kind of small error that propagates. A wire desk identifies a speller by the newspaper that sponsored her; a later compiler reads the headline and records a home town; and a hundred years on, two places are attached to one child.

Where the sources here disagree, this page says so rather than choosing. What they agree on is the year, the word, the age and the result.

What the bee was in 1932

The competition in 1932 was in its early years, run by the sponsoring newspapers that had built it in the 1920s. The Depression was at its worst, which made both the prize and the trip to Washington a serious proposition for an Iowa family.

Fields were small, the rounds ran in a day, and the result moved on the wires that evening. The archive of a 1932 champion is whatever the wire desks chose to file, which in Greenwald's case is two short stories with different headlines.

Muscatine

Muscatine was then best known for pearl buttons cut from Mississippi river mussels, an industry that had made the town briefly famous and was already declining by the 1930s. A national spelling champion from there was a genuine local event.

She stayed connected to the place. Her death, on 2 September 2008, was in Muscatine - the same town she had left to go to Washington seventy-six years earlier.

What is documented, and what is not

Documented: the 1932 championship, the winning word invulnerable, her age of 13, Muscatine in Iowa, her seventeenth place at the 1931 bee, the runner-up Kenneth Cecil of Kentucky and his miss on interchangeably, and her death on 2 September 2008.

Not documented in these sources: her school, her family, the prize money, her working life, and which newspaper sponsored her - the point on which the two contemporary headlines differ.
