🇺🇸 Dean Lucas

The 1927 final

The Miami News reported on 24 June 1927 that an Ohio boy had won the spelling bee at Washington. Lucas was 13, from West Salem in Wayne County, and had reached the capital through the Akron Beacon Journal, one of the newspapers that ran regional bees in the competition's first decade.

Abrogate comes from the Latin abrogare, to repeal a law. The a in the middle follows the Latin stem; the e that Keenan supplied follows the English ear. One vowel decided the 1927 national championship.

The second appearance

This was not his first trip. Lucas had competed at the national bee before, and returned to win - the pattern that runs through the competition's history and that modern champions almost all share.

It is worth stating plainly because the bee is often described as a test of raw talent. It is at least as much a test of return visits: of a child willing to prepare for a second year after a public elimination.

A thousand dollars in 1927

The prize was $1,000, the same figure the bee paid in 1931 and a substantial sum in the years before the Depression. The competition was then only a few years old in its national form, and the prize money was the mechanism by which sponsoring newspapers persuaded families to take part.

For a family in a Wayne County village, a thousand dollars was not pocket money. It was the reason the regional bees filled, and the reason the papers printed the results on page one.

The bee's own history

In 2017 the Akron Beacon Journal returned to the subject under a headline that speaks for itself: the spelling bee misspells its own history. The column's argument is not reproduced here, because the page could not be retrieved for this profile, and this file does not summarise what it has not read.

The headline is worth recording all the same. Compilations of early champions have circulated for decades with inconsistent names, dates and towns, and a 1927 winner is exactly the kind of entry where the record has drifted.

West Salem

West Salem is a village in northern Ohio, a few hundred people then as now, surrounded by farmland and served in the 1920s by the railway. A national champion from a settlement that size was a considerable local event and a good story for the Akron paper that had sent him.

Nothing else about his childhood appears in the sources used here. The competition record is the whole of what survives, and no later report in this file mentions him again.

What is documented, and what is not

Documented: the 1927 championship, the winning word abrogate, the $1,000 prize, his age of 13, West Salem in Ohio, the Akron Beacon Journal sponsorship, the runner-up Ralph Keenan's spelling of abregate, and that this was his second national appearance.

Not documented in the sources used here: his school, his family, the number of rounds, and anything at all about his life after June 1927. He is among the earliest champions in this collection and, unsurprisingly, among the least documented.
