Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) bridges classical and romantic music and represents perhaps the greatest triumph of creative will in art history. Becoming completely deaf, he composed his Ninth Symphony — including the 'Ode to Joy' — without hearing a note. His late string quartets represent music that was incomprehensible to his contemporaries and is still felt to be ahead of its time.
