Rocco Francis Marchegiano was born on September 1, 1923, in Brockton, Massachusetts, to Pierino Marchegiano and Pasqualena Picciuto, Italian immigrants who had come to America seeking the possibility of a better life. Brockton was a shoe-manufacturing town, and the Marchegiano family's circumstances were modest; Rocky's father worked in a shoe factory and suffered from lung problems that would eventually force him from the work entirely.
