Born in Riga, Latvia, in 1936, the eighth World Chess Champion played the game in a way that had never been seen before and has never been fully replicated since. He sacrificed pieces — knights, bishops, sometimes rooks — in positions where the compensation was invisible to anyone but him, creating whirlwinds of tactical complexity in which opponents invariably drowned. He became World Champion at twenty-three. His reign lasted only a year. His influence on chess lasted forever.
