Desmond Mpilo Tutu was born on October 7, 1931, in Klerksdorp, South Africa, the son of a schoolteacher who had converted from Methodism to Anglicanism. His given middle name, Mpilo, means "life" in Zulu — a word that would prove apt for a man who spent nine decades radiating a life force that made even his most serious moral stands feel irresistibly warm.
