In 1884, a twenty-one-year-old French conservatory student named Achille-Claude Debussy won the Prix de Rome — the most prestigious award available to a young composer in France — with a cantata called L'Enfant prodigue. It was a conventional enough piece, built within the accepted harmonic grammar of the day, and the jury approved it precisely because it followed the rules.
