While his colleagues could be competitive, petty, or simply absorbed in their own work, Pissarro remained consistently generous — with his time, his expertise, and his encouragement. He was the eldest of the core group, the one they called "Father Pissarro," and his studio in Pontoise became an informal academy where Cézanne and Gauguin both learned to see.
