Andrew Warhola was born on August 6, 1928, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the third child of Lemko immigrants from what is now Slovakia. His father worked in coal mines and construction; his mother, Julia, made tin flowers and sold tin cans decorated with folk motifs door to door.
