A childhood of numbers
Bouman's account of his own beginnings, given in the 2021 interview, starts absurdly early: the alphabet at eighteen months, clock-reading at three, the multiplication tables committed to memory by third grade. He describes the aptitude as "a God-given talent" rather than an achievement, and the structures he found later as things he stumbled into rather than built — writing out the squares of every number up to a thousand, then noticing the patterns that connect roots and powers.
That self-taught geometry of numbers is what separates a calculator from someone merely fast. The tricks are not tricks; they are compressed structure, discovered once and then used for sixty years.
The man who corrected Wim Klein
At twenty he met Wim Klein, the most famous mental calculator the Netherlands has produced. Klein held that only second, fourth and eighth roots were extractable in the head. Bouman explained his own methods for nineteenth and seventy-third roots, and, by his account, Klein subsequently adopted them.
It is a small scene with a large implication. The public history of mental calculation is a history of performers; the technical history is passed between individuals in conversations like that one, almost none of which are recorded. This one was, thirty years after the fact, in a blog interview.
A career elsewhere, then a late start
Bouman did not make a living from numbers. He worked as a salesman for twenty-eight years and served as an elder in his church for twenty-eight years. He was married fifty-five years at the time of the interview, with three children and six grandchildren, and builds model railways.
He began competing at the top level at sixty-seven. His first serious outing came in 2006, where he met calculators including Gert Mittring and Jan van Koningsveld; he competed at the 2012 World Cup in Gießen and taught at the Junior Mental Calculation World Cup in Bielefeld. His daily practice, as he described it, is addition, decimal square roots, writing five-digit numbers as the sum of four squares, and Hectoc.
The retirement that did not hold
The 2021 interview reads like a closing statement. He said he would not compete again and gave his reason: the tournaments measure quantity — how many answers in how many minutes — rather than the qualities he cares about in a calculation.
The 2024 World Cup results say otherwise. World Mental Calculation's report of 20 September 2024 records him in the field as its eldest competitor at 84. Both statements are documented, three years apart, and this page reports the contradiction rather than resolving it: the sources used here do not say what changed his mind.
