Arpanın daha hızlı çimlenmesini sağlayan bakteriler, Cork'lu bir genci Google Science Fair'ın zirvesine taşıdı

Sophie Healy-Thow, 2014 büyük ödülünü paylaştı ve TIME'ın etkili gençler listesine girdi

TIME dergisi onu o yılın en etkili 25 genci arasına dahil etti. İrlanda'nın ulusal bilim yarışmasını zaten kazanmıştı.

The experiment

The project used Diazotroph bacteria, nitrogen-fixing microbes that live around the roots of legumes, and applied them to cereal seed. The result was faster germination, which in agricultural terms means a crop that establishes sooner and, potentially, yields more from the same ground.

It is a rare kind of school project: cheap to run, repeatable, and aimed at a problem, crop productivity, that governments spend billions on. That combination is what science fair judges reward, and it is why the work travelled beyond the fair.

From Cork to the Google Science Fair

Healy-Thow's route ran through Ireland's own competition first. She won the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in 2013 and took a prize at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists the same year, before the Google Science Fair grand prize in 2014.

The Irish Examiner placed her in that lineage in a January 2014 feature on where previous Young Scientist winners had ended up. The BT competition has run since the 1960s and is the largest event of its kind in Ireland; winning it is the step most Irish scientists of her generation describe as the one that opened the rest.

TIME's list

On 13 October 2014 TIME published its 25 Most Influential Teens, and Healy-Thow was on it. The list that year mixed musicians and activists with founders, among them Erik Finman, the American teenager who had funded a startup with Bitcoin.

Being on that list is a measure of reach rather than of scientific merit. What it did for the project was give a piece of crop microbiology an audience that ordinarily reads about pop stars.

Where Sophie Healy-Thow is now

The sources gathered for this page end in 2014. No university, career or later project is documented in them.

Science fair winners often continue in research or in policy, and the absence of a record here is a limit of this file rather than evidence about her. Anyone writing that she now works in a particular field is going beyond what these two sources support. The Irish Examiner feature that appears among them was itself an attempt to answer that question about an earlier generation of winners, which is a reminder that the follow-up usually has to be reported rather than assumed.

What is documented and what is not

Documented: a shared Google Science Fair grand prize in 2014 at 17, for work using Diazotroph bacteria to speed the germination of cereal crops; a place on TIME's 25 Most Influential Teens of 2014; a BT Young Scientist win in 2013; a European Union Contest for Young Scientists prize in 2013; and a home town of Kinsale, County Cork.

Not documented here: her date of birth, the names of her collaborators, the published form of the research, her studies and anything after 2014. The birth year on this page is derived from her reported age at the time of the prize.
