🇵🇰 Shafay Thobani

Certified by Microsoft at eight, and questioned almost as quickly

Shafay Thobani's exam pass in Karachi in 2012 came with a world record claim that Microsoft would not confirm.

In July 2012 an eight-year-old in Karachi passed a Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist examination and was presented to the world as the youngest person ever to hold the qualification. The certification was real. The record was not verifiable: Microsoft said it does not track the ages of the people who sit its exams, and one Pakistani newspaper asked publicly whether the campaign around Shafay Thobani had outrun the achievement.

The examination he passed

Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist was a professional credential awarded on a proctored examination covering a specific Microsoft technology. It is taken by working IT staff, and a pass is a pass whatever the age of the candidate.

HuffPost reported the achievement on 18 July 2012, and Business Recorder and Aaj News carried it in Pakistan. Thobani is from Karachi; his father is Dr Shah Thobani. The examinations are sat at authorised test centres under invigilation, which means the pass itself is the least disputed part of the story.

The claim Microsoft would not confirm

The headline attached to the pass was not a certification but a superlative: the world's youngest holder of the credential. Microsoft's response, recorded in the coverage, was that it does not track the ages of candidates and therefore could not confirm any such record.

That is a common shape for records of this kind. A company that certifies skills has no interest in maintaining an age league table, so a claim of being youngest can only ever be an absence of contradiction rather than a verified fact.

Prodigy or publicity

The Express Tribune put the question in its headline: world's youngest MCTS, or self-proclaimed child prodigy? The piece examined the promotional effort around the boy rather than disputing that he had sat and passed the examination.

It is a distinction worth preserving in both directions. Scepticism about a publicity campaign is not scepticism about a child's ability, and an eight-year-old who passes a professional IT examination has done something unusual whether or not anyone younger has done it somewhere unreported. The claim that failed verification was the record, not the result.

What is documented, and what is not

Documented: an eight-year-old in Karachi passed a Microsoft certification examination in 2012, and the story was reported internationally by HuffPost and across Pakistan. Not documented: any verification of the youngest-ever claim, and any account of what he has done since.

He was a child at the time and this page reports nothing about his schooling or private life beyond what was published then. The sources used here end in 2012, and his adult life is not described.

The credential itself has since moved on. Microsoft retired the Technology Specialist programme and replaced it with newer certification tracks, so the qualification named in the 2012 reports no longer exists in the form it was awarded, and cannot be compared against current holders.

Why IT certifications attract young record claims

Vendor certifications are one of the few adult qualifications open to anyone who can pass the test. There is no minimum age, no degree requirement and no professional gatekeeper, only a booking, a fee and an invigilated examination, which makes them the natural venue for youngest-ever attempts.

That openness is also what makes the resulting records unverifiable. The examinations are administered globally at commercial test centres in large volume, no register of candidate ages is published, and the certifying companies have consistently declined to adjudicate. What survives is the credential itself, which is the part this page reports as fact.
