What happened

Khaleej Times reported that three students were named champions of the eighth Arab Reading Challenge on 23 October 2024, each receiving Dh500,000. Salsabil, 17, from Palestine, was one of them. She had read 500 books and had won among 346,778 Palestinian participants.

The awards were presented by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, at Dubai Opera, as the Dubai Media Office recorded. Her co-champions were Hatem Al Turkawi of Syria, nine, and Kady Bint Misfer of Saudi Arabia, 11.

What she said

"This competition has shaped our personalities and elevated all Arab students," she said, quoted by Khaleej Times. It is a collective sentence rather than a personal one, and it describes what the challenge claims for itself as accurately as any official statement of the evening.

Her stated ambition was journalism and media. Among the 2024 champions, hers was the plan that pointed outward: from reading in private to reporting in public.

It is worth noting what the quoted line does not do. It makes no claim about her own ability, offers no advice and names no favourite book. A seventeen-year-old handed a microphone in front of a head of government used the sentence to credit the competition and the students in it, which is the kind of remark that rarely survives into a headline.

Reading in Palestine in 2024

The figure of 346,778 Palestinian entrants is the one to sit with. It records a school population entering a reading competition across a year in which Palestinian schooling was under extreme strain, and it was published by the competition's organisers as a straightforward participation number.

The sources gathered here do not state where in Palestine she lives or which school she attends, and this page does not speculate. What they state is that she read 500 books over a competition year and won her national round.

Reading at that volume is also a particular kind of discipline. Five hundred books across a competition year is close to ten a week, each one logged and summarised in a form the judges can question her on, which is why the challenge's finalists are tested on argument rather than on totals. The number is the entry ticket; the final rounds decide the title.

The competition's scale

The 2024 edition drew 28.2 million participants from 229,620 schools across 50 countries, with 154,643 supervising teachers, according to Khaleej Times. Pupils read through the school year, write summaries, and are examined in successive rounds until a handful are left to compete in Dubai.

Alongside the three individual champions, Al-Ebdah School in Dubai took Dh1 million as the winning school, Mohammed Al-Fateh Al-Rifai received Dh100,000 as community champion from a non-Arab country, and Mohamed Ahmed Hassan of Egypt won the People of Determination category.

Three champions were named in 2024 rather than one, an arrangement the organisers presented as a shared title across three countries. For a competition that normally produces a single winner, splitting the crown between a nine-year-old Syrian, an eleven-year-old Saudi and a seventeen-year-old Palestinian was a statement about the breadth of the field as much as about the three children on the stage.

What is documented, and what is not

Firmly established: her age of 17, the 500 books, the 346,778 national entrants, the Dh500,000 prize, the date and venue, her quoted words and her stated ambition.

Not established: her date of birth, her city, her school, her family, and anything that has happened since October 2024. The research record also lists her fuller name, Salsabil Hassan Sawalha, which appears in some coverage. Where the sources stop, this page stops.
