🇺🇸 Saketh Sundar

Fourth trip to Washington, and Maryland finally had a champion

Saketh Sundar, 13, of Clarksville, was one of the eight co-champions of the 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Saketh Sundar had been to the national finals three times before 2019. On his fourth trip, the thirteen-year-old from Clarksville, Maryland, spelled bougainvillea and became one of eight children the Scripps National Spelling Bee declared champions on the same night, the first champion his state had produced.

Four trips

Bee champions are almost never newcomers. Sundar qualified for the national finals four times, and the title came on the last of them, which is the ordinary shape of a spelling career: a first appearance to learn the format, two more to climb, and one to win.

Each trip has to be earned again. A speller must win a regional contest every year to return, so four appearances mean four separate victories over a home field before reaching Washington at all.

Eligibility is finite as well. A speller may not compete after the eighth grade, which caps a career at a handful of attempts and makes a fourth trip, in most cases, a last one.

Bougainvillea, and the eight-way title

His winning word names the climbing plant, which takes its name from an eighteenth-century French navigator. It is a word most people have seen and few can spell, which made it a fitting end to a competition that had exhausted the obscure vocabulary and was reaching for anything that might separate the finalists.

The 2019 final ran 20 rounds over three days. The eight who remained had beaten 557 competitors aged between seven and fifteen, and no word could remove them. Scripps declared all eight champions, each receiving 50,000 dollars and a Scripps Cup, with the pronouncer Jacques Bailly describing them as "the most phenomenal assemblage of spellers in the history of this storied competition".

Maryland's first

No speller from Maryland had won the national bee before 2019, despite the competition being held in the Washington area for decades and drawing its audience from exactly that region.

Records of that kind are more common than they sound. The bee has run since the 1920s and some states have several champions while others have none, because a national title depends on one child from one regional contest happening to be the best speller in the country in a particular year.

Where Saketh Sundar is now

The sources gathered for this page date from the week of the final and do not record his schooling, studies or work since.

The Associated Press called the 2019 competition too easy for its octet of champions, and The Atlantic described eight middle schoolers toppling it; the Washington Post traced the result to an expanded field and the rise of private coaching. What none of them did was return, in later years, to say what became of the eight. This page reports the record that exists and marks the gap where the rest should be.
