What the doodle shows
The drawing places Wu and her two sisters together, cups of hot chocolate in hand, framed by flowers and climbing vines. A rainbow sits behind them. It is a domestic scene rather than a symbolic one, and it was made to answer a prompt about gratitude.
Her artist statement declines the sentimentality the subject invites. “Sometimes I love them, and sometimes I dislike them very much, but I can't imagine my life without my sisters,” she wrote. The rainbow has a specific source: it was, she said, one of the first things she helped one of her sisters draw.
A day on the homepage
The doodle ran on Google's United States homepage on 6 June 2023. The prize followed the contest's usual shape: $30,000 in college scholarship money for the artist and a $50,000 technology package for the school behind her.
Google's page shows her celebrating with her two younger sisters. It is the only photograph in the record used here, and it is the only place the family appears outside the drawing itself.
What Google's page does not say
Google's own doodle page is unusually sparse on the artist. It does not give her age, her grade, her school, her town or her state. It does not say how many entries the 2023 contest drew or how the winner was announced. It does not title the doodle.
The research record compiled for this page places her in Washington state and in the grades six-to-seven band, following a Wikipedia list of contest winners. Neither detail appears on Google's page, and neither is treated as confirmed here. Rebecca Wu is also a common name, which makes loose attribution easy and careless attribution damaging.
What is documented — and what is not
The firm facts are few and they are strong, because they come from the organisation that ran the contest: the theme, the date the doodle ran, what it depicts, her two quotations, the two prize figures and the existence of two younger sisters.
Everything else is open. No age, no year of birth, no school, no town, no account of what she has done since June 2023. Her sisters are documented only as figures in a drawing and a photograph; they are not named here and no source used here names them.
Why a family drawing wins
Doodle for Google sets a sentence and asks tens of thousands of children to finish it in pictures. The prompts are broad by design, and broad prompts usually produce broad answers: planets, crowds, inventions, a repaired world.
The entries that survive the judging tend to be the narrow ones. Wu answered a question about gratitude with three people and a drink, and with a line about sibling irritation that no adult copywriter would have supplied. For twenty-four hours the most-used page in the country carried an argument about sisters, made by someone who has two.
