🇺🇸 Rachel Seevers

Society for Science ödül listesi belgelenmiş kayıttır ve bilgiler burada sona ermektedir.

The award

Seevers took one of two Intel Foundation Young Scientist Awards given at ISEF 2019, each worth $50,000. The other went to Allison Jia of San Jose, California. The fair's single largest prize, the $75,000 Gordon E. Moore Award, went to Krithik Ramesh of Greenwood Village, Colorado.

Her project was registered under the title "Bioinspired Submersible Dual Propulsion System: A Novel Approach to Ultra-Efficient Submarine Propulsion Utilizing Starting and Stopping Vortex Rings Mirroring Jellyfish Motion" — a sentence that names the animal, the physics and the application in one line.

Why jellyfish are worth copying

Propellers are loud and, in energy terms, wasteful: they push water backwards continuously and lose much of the effort to turbulence. A jellyfish does something different. It contracts, ejects a ring of rotating water, then relaxes, and both halves of the cycle contribute to movement.

That is what Seevers's title points to in naming both the starting and the stopping vortex ring. A design that harvests thrust from the recovery stroke as well as the power stroke is doing more with each contraction, which is where the claim of ultra-efficiency comes from. The award listing does not publish her test data, her efficiency figures or any drawings, so the numbers behind the claim are not on the public record.

What a Young Scientist Award represents

Intel ISEF 2019 was assembled from 423 affiliated fairs in more than 80 countries, regions and territories, and brought over 1,800 finalists to one hall. About 600 of them won an award; 22 Best of Category winners took $5,000 plus a $3,000 first-place prize, with $1,000 grants flowing back to their schools and their regional fairs.

In that structure, a Young Scientist Award is the second rung from the top, and only two are given. It is the most that an engineering project can win at the fair short of the grand prize.

What is documented — and what is not

Documented: the award, the amount, her age, her home town and the exact project title, all published by the Society for Science, which runs the fair. Competition results of this kind are unusually reliable, because the organiser has no incentive to misstate its own winners.

Not documented, anywhere in this record: whether the propulsion system was patented, built at larger scale, tested in open water, or taken further at university. There is no follow-up interview and no later notice in these sources. The honest answer to "what happened next" is that the published trail ends in May 2019.

The wider field she was working in

Bio-inspired propulsion is a real research area rather than a school-project conceit, and jellyfish are one of its standing subjects precisely because their cost of transport is low compared with propeller-driven craft of similar size. Quiet, efficient underwater movement matters to oceanography, to environmental monitoring and to anything that has to run for a long time on a small battery.

A teenager arriving at that problem with a working demonstration is unusual mainly for the engineering it requires: building something that moves water measurably, then measuring it well enough to convince a panel of judges who interrogate finalists for hours. The award is evidence that the second half was done as carefully as the first.
