A site built at 18
Coverage of Omegle began within weeks of its launch. An April 2009 write-up described the chat program as a way to meet people anonymously, which is what the product was: no profile, no registration, no history. One person, one stranger, one conversation at a time.
K-Brooks was 18 and working from Brattleboro, Vermont, according to Wikipedia's article on the site. The technical achievement was modest; the product decision was not. Removing identity from online conversation was a deliberate design choice at the exact moment the rest of the web was moving the other way, towards real names and permanent profiles.
Fourteen years of scale
Omegle outlasted most of the services launched beside it. It became a fixture of internet culture, a staple of reaction videos and a name recognised by people who had never used it, and it ran for fourteen years with an owner who stayed largely out of public view.
It ran without the machinery that later sites built around identity: no logins, no friend lists, no feed. That simplicity is what made it popular and what made it hard to police.
The shutdown
On 9 November 2023 the BBC reported that the video chat website had been closed after abuse claims. K-Brooks shut the site down on 8 November 2023, ending it rather than attempting to rebuild it under different rules.
This page records the shutdown as the BBC reported it and does not restate the allegations or the litigation around them. What is documented is the date, the decision and the reason given in the reporting: a service built on anonymity closed under the weight of what anonymity allowed.
Why the case is cited
Omegle is now a standard reference point in arguments about platform responsibility. It is the clearest example of a service created by one teenager that grew to a scale where its moderation problem was larger than any individual could solve.
The founder's age at launch is part of why it is cited. An 18-year-old shipped a product with global reach and no institutional structure behind it, and the consequences arrived over the following decade rather than in the launch year. That sequence is the reason the case appears in discussions of how platforms should be governed.
What is documented and what is not
Documented: the 2009 launch of Omegle when K-Brooks was 18, the anonymous pairing model, his base in Brattleboro, Vermont as recorded by Wikipedia, and the closure of the site on 8 November 2023 after abuse claims, as reported by the BBC.
Not documented here: his date of birth, any earnings or sale figure, his work since 2023, and any personal detail beyond the founding and closing of the site. The birth year given on this page is approximate, derived from his reported age at launch.
