🇹🇭 Katanyou Wuttichaitanakorn

Teknesinin yanında bir balina su yüzüne çıktı. On altı yaşındaydı ve hazırdı.

The photograph

The image is what its title says: baleen, seen close. Bryde's whales feed by lunging near the surface, opening the mouth wide enough to show the fringed plates that filter their food from the water, and Katanyou's photograph catches that structure at the moment it is exposed.

The species is a plausible subject in Thai waters, where Bryde's whales feed within reach of small boats in the Gulf of Thailand, but proximity is not the same as a picture. A surfacing whale gives a photographer a second or two of unpredictable action at close range, on a moving boat, with a subject far larger than the frame. The picture is a technical achievement as much as an encounter.

The competition he won

Wildlife Photographer of the Year is run by the Natural History Museum in London and is the best-known competition in the field. The 2022 edition was its fifty-eighth, and its announcement on 11 October 2022 named Karine Aigner as the overall Wildlife Photographer of the Year alongside Katanyou as the Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

The young title is not a consolation category. It is awarded from the entries by photographers under 18, judged by the same panel and exhibited alongside the adult winners at the museum, and the winning image travels with the exhibition internationally.

A naturalist first

The Natural History Museum described him as a keen naturalist and photographer who had been taking pictures since the age of 12. The order of those two words is the useful part.

Wildlife photography of this kind rewards knowledge of animals more than equipment. Knowing when a Bryde's whale is likely to lunge, where to be on the boat and what the light will do is the difference between a photograph of a whale and a photograph of the water where a whale was. Four years of watching before the winning frame is a short apprenticeship, but it is an apprenticeship.

Where Katanyou Wuttichaitanakorn is now

This was his first award in the competition, and the sources used here go no further than the 2022 announcement. No later entry, exhibition, publication or course of study is documented in this record.

He was 16 at the time and is a young adult now. Nothing in the material used for this page describes his current work, and this page does not speculate about it.

What the young title has meant for others

The Natural History Museum's competition attracts entries in the tens of thousands from around the world each year, and the exhibition that follows tours internationally, which makes a winning image one of the most widely seen photographs a teenager can take. That visibility, rather than prize money, is what the award confers.

For a photographer from Thailand the effect is amplified. The competition's winning images have historically come disproportionately from a small number of countries with established wildlife-photography industries, and a young title awarded for a Thai subject photographed in Thai waters places a local ecosystem in front of a global audience that would otherwise never see it.
