HIGH JUMP PRODIGY

🇦🇺 Izobelle Louison-Roe

Two years after losing this title by three centimetres, she came back and won it

2026 World Athletics U20 high jump champion • world U20 silver in Lima, 2024 • Australian U20 triple jump record holder at 13.36m

In 2024, at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Izobelle Louison-Roe cleared 1.89 metres and finished second. On 9 August 2026, at Hayward Field in Eugene, she cleared 1.92 and won. Hungary's Lilianna Bátori took silver with 1.90 and Spain's Aitana Alonso took bronze on countback at the same height, equalling the Spanish U20 record. The Australian, who had arrived as the world U20 leader and the athlete her federation described as carrying the most pressure on the team, was the only jumper to clear the winning bar.

High jump is the event with the least margin between the athlete who wins and the athlete who does not: the difference in Eugene was two centimetres, and Bátori and Alonso jumped the same height as each other. It is also the event in which the pre-competition favourite has the worst record of delivering, because the bar heights are public, the order is fixed, and there is nowhere to hide a bad first attempt. Louison-Roe had lost a global final at this level once already, in Lima, to Serbia's Angelina Topić.

Her 2026 season had built toward it methodically. She cleared 1.95 metres twice — at the Capital Athletics Open in Canberra in January and again at the Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne in March, where she finished second on countback to Nicola Olyslagers, an Olympic medallist and one of the two or three best senior high jumpers in the world. She then won the Australian U20 title with 1.93 in a competition where she was also entered in the triple jump.

The triple jump result is the part of her record that gets overlooked. At the same Australian U20 championships she won that event too, with 13.36 metres, equalling the Australian U20 record set by Linda Allen in 2006. Doubling in the high jump and the triple jump at national level is rare at any age, because the two events demand opposite things from the take-off leg — vertical conversion in one, horizontal preservation in the other. She repeated the double at the Oceania Championships in Darwin in May 2026, winning the high jump with 1.85 and taking silver in the triple.

Australia's high jump depth at senior level is currently the strongest in its history, with Olyslagers and Eleanor Patterson both world medallists, which gives Louison-Roe a domestic training environment that very few age-group jumpers anywhere have access to. Her federation's account of Eugene emphasised the expectation she was under rather than the height she cleared, and her own account, given the day after, was about setting that expectation aside rather than meeting it.

For accuracy: 1.92 metres is three centimetres below her own 2026 best of 1.95, so this was a winning height and not a record. She was nineteen, at the top of the U20 age band. The result is a favourite converting under pressure two years after failing to — which is a specific and unglamorous kind of achievement, and a more predictive one than a surprise.

The result that makes her interesting is not the gold medal but the 1.95 in Melbourne, where she finished second on countback to Nicola Olyslagers — an Olympic medallist and a genuine senior world contender. Age-group champions are common; age-group jumpers who push a world-class senior to countback are not. The world U20 title is the confirmation of that, delivered two years after she lost the same final by three centimetres.

Two honest caveats. She was nineteen and the pre-event favourite, so this was expectation met rather than exceeded, and 1.92 was below her own season's best. The more unusual line on her record is the triple jump: an Australian U20 record in an event whose take-off mechanics conflict directly with the high jump. Whether she keeps both, or whether one eventually has to go, is the real question about her next two seasons.
