The 1935 bee

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported on 30 May 1935 that a girl had won the National Spelling Bee. Mohler was 13, from Coventry Township in Summit County, Ohio, a rural township on the southern edge of Akron. The runner-up was Paul McCusker of Niagara Falls.

Her winning word was intelligible - capable of being understood, from the Latin intelligere. The trap is the ending: the -ible that English takes from Latin verbs of the third conjugation, against the -able that a speller reasoning from the sound would reach for first.

What she did with it

Mohler studied foreign languages at Ohio University and taught for more than forty years. Among the bee's champions she is one of the clearest cases of a childhood aptitude becoming a career: the child who won on a Latin-derived adjective spent her working life teaching the languages those adjectives come from.

The Akron Beacon Journal returned to the story in 2015, in a local history column that described how a Coventry girl of 13 had spelled her way to national fame in the 1935 bee. She died in 2013.

Forty years in a classroom is also the kind of afterwards that rarely gets recorded. The bee's champions are photographed once, at thirteen, and then almost never again, and it took a local history column in 2015 to set down what she did with the sixty years that followed.

Akron and the bee

North-eastern Ohio was unusually productive for the national competition in its early decades, largely because the Akron Beacon Journal was one of the sponsoring newspapers that took the bee seriously, running regional competitions and funding trips to Washington.

The sponsorship system explains most of the geography of early champions. Where a paper invested, champions appeared; where none did, whole states went unrepresented for years at a time.

The word and the rule

Intelligible is a good test word because it punishes intuition and rewards study. English borrowed thousands of Latin adjectives and kept two endings for them, and the choice between -ible and -able follows the Latin stem rather than the English sound.

Champions learn those rules as a system. It is why the top spellers can handle words they have never seen, and why a 13-year-old in 1935 with a dictionary and a plan could beat competitors who had simply read more.

The same logic applies to the rest of the list. A national bee is won on categories rather than on words: Greek endings, French borrowings, Latin stems, German compounds. The champion is the child who has learned which category a word belongs to before spelling a single letter of it.

What is documented, and what is not

Documented: the 1935 championship, the winning word intelligible, her age of 13, Coventry Township in Ohio, the runner-up Paul McCusker of Niagara Falls, her foreign-languages degree from Ohio University, a teaching career of more than forty years, and her death in 2013.

Not documented in the sources used here: her family, the prize money, the number of rounds, and where she taught. The 2015 local-history column is the only source here that looks back across her life.
