The tie that decided it
The route out of a Britain's Got Talent semi-final is usually clean: one act wins the public vote, the judges choose a second. In Courtney's semi-final in 2018 the judges' vote tied, and the series record notes that the deadlock was broken by the public vote, which he had taken 16.1 per cent of — second on the night.
It is the rarest way to reach a final in this format, and it leaves an unusually exact record behind: a percentage, a tied panel, and a rule applied in public.
Ninth in the 2018 final
The final was broadcast on 3 June 2018 and won by Lost Voice Guy, a stand-up comedian who performs using a communication aid, with the comic singer and keyboardist Robert White second. Courtney finished ninth with 3.5 per cent.
Series twelve ran from 14 April to 3 June and averaged 8.34 million viewers. That is a smaller audience than the show commanded at its peak and still one of the largest available on British television, which is the scale a ten-year-old sang into twice in seven weeks.
An unusual series to be part of
The 2018 run was distinctive behind the desk as well as in front of it. David Walliams, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and Simon Cowell judged. Ant McPartlin presented the auditions, but the live episodes were hosted by Declan Donnelly alone — the series record states the split plainly, and it made that year's live shows unlike any before them.
The winner was equally unusual for a format built on big voices: a comedian whose act depends on timing rather than volume. Against that backdrop, a ten-year-old singer finishing ninth of the finalists is a result within a competition that had already broken its own pattern.
What is documented — and what is not
Firm: his age, his category, the semi-final, the tied judges' vote, the 16.1 per cent that resolved it, the ninth place and the 3.5 per cent in the final. It is an unusually detailed competitive record for a child act.
Absent from the sources used here: his home town, his school, his family, his song choices, any quotation, and any account of what he has done since 2018. He was ten at the time and is a young adult now, and no source in this record documents that span. The gap is listed rather than filled.
Why the numbers outlive the coverage
Talent shows generate two archives. One is journalistic — audition clips, tabloid profiles, a week of headlines — and it decays quickly. The other is administrative: the results table, updated round by round, which records exactly who voted for whom and when.
The second archive is what survives, and it is the one this page is built on. It cannot say what a performer sounded like or what happened next, but it does not misremember either, and for a child performer that reliability is worth more than a decade of recollection.
