What happened
ABC15 Arizona reported in February 2025 that a five-year-old from the Phoenix area had earned Mensa membership, with an IQ of 145 and formal recognition as profoundly gifted. A CNN Newsource version of the story was carried by KVIA on 27 February, and The Independent covered it on 26 February under a headline calling him a real-life Sheldon, a reference to the television character.
The abilities listed in the coverage are specific: independent reading from four, advanced mathematics, chess, piano, Lego and BMX racing. The research record adds that he read 100 books in one month and that he is in the Deer Valley School District's gifted programme.
The question his parents were asked
The framing of the ABC15 report was unusual and worth noting: it was built less around the number than around the problem. How do you raise and nurture a child whose mind is far ahead of the curve while making sure he still gets a childhood?
That is the question specialists in gifted education spend careers on, and it does not have a clean answer. Acceleration risks isolation; holding a child back risks boredom and disengagement. The coverage does not claim to resolve it, which is to its credit.
How to read the number
An IQ of 145 is reported here as the outlets reported it. No source read for this page names the test used or who administered it, and results for five-year-olds are less stable than results for adults.
Mensa's threshold is the 98th percentile on a supervised test, and admission at five means a child completed such a test under supervision. That is the verifiable part. The rest, what the score will mean at fifteen or twenty-five, is not knowable from a news report.
The Sheldon problem
The Independent's headline reached for a sitcom character, which is how stories about gifted children are usually sold to a general audience. It is an easy shorthand and a poor one: the character it invokes is a comic construction built on social difficulty, and attaching it to a real five-year-old assigns him a personality he has not been reported to have.
The sources here describe a child who reads, plays chess and piano and races bicycles. That is a fuller picture than the headline, and it is the one this page keeps.
What is documented, and what is not
Firmly established: Mensa membership at five in early 2025, a reported IQ of 145, recognition as profoundly gifted, independent reading from four, and interests including chess, piano, Lego and BMX.
Not established: the test used, his date of birth, his school, and anything since February 2025. The sources also differ on his mother's surname, given as Jill Bartlett by ABC15 and as Jill Barnett in the research record's summary of The Independent. He is a small child, and this page carries nothing about his home or routine beyond what the family told reporters.
