YOUNG FOUNDER

🇰🇿 Arlan Rakhmetzhanov

Left school in Kazakhstan at eighteen and raised a multimillion-dollar seed round in San Francisco

Founder and CEO of Nozomio • Y Combinator Summer 2025 • ~$6M seed round reported in 2025

The standard founder story starts at a university and ends in San Francisco. Arlan Rakhmetzhanov skipped the middle. In 2025, at eighteen, he left high school in Kazakhstan for Y Combinator's summer batch and raised a seed round reported at around six million dollars for a company with a team of three.

Y Combinator's company page lists Nozomio as a Summer 2025 batch company, founded in 2025, headquartered in San Francisco, with Rakhmetzhanov as solo founder and chief executive and a team size of three. Business Insider reported on 1 October 2025 that the high-school-dropout founder had raised a six-million-dollar seed round; other outlets put the figure at $6.2 million. Reporting names CRV, BoxGroup and LocalGlobe among the investors. Earlier, on 7 May 2025, UKTN reported that the artificial-intelligence startup behind the product Nia, founded by an eighteen-year-old, had closed a pre-seed round led by LocalGlobe.

The product explains the money. Nia is an MCP server — a piece of infrastructure that indexes entire codebases and documentation sites so that AI coding agents such as Cursor, Cline and Continue can retrieve external context rather than guessing at it. The bottleneck it addresses is specific and widely felt: a coding agent that has read your repository but not the library documentation will confidently write code against an interface that does not exist.

In Nozomio's Y Combinator launch post, the company reports internal evaluations in which Cursor's performance improved by twenty-seven per cent once Nia had indexed external documentation. That is the company's own number, not an independent benchmark, and it should be read as such — but it is the claim the round was raised against.

His own account of the years before Y Combinator, given in his founder biography, describes a first startup launched at fifteen and a research position at Stanford obtained at sixteen by cold email. He describes himself as a solo-founder immigrant from Kazakhstan.

Two things make the case unusual rather than merely young. The first is that he is a solo founder: Y Combinator has historically preferred teams, and backing a single eighteen-year-old is a deliberate exception. The second is geography — Almaty is not on the standard map of venture pipelines, and the pre-seed came from a London firm before the American round.

The Model Context Protocol, published in late 2024, standardised how AI assistants connect to external tools and data sources. It created a category almost overnight: servers that expose a specific corpus — a codebase, a documentation set, an internal wiki — to any compliant agent. The commercial opportunity is real and the barrier to entry is low, which means the category's companies compete on retrieval quality and on how quickly they adapt when the underlying agents change.

Y Combinator has funded roughly five thousand companies since 2005 and its batches now run to several hundred at a time, with a standard investment in exchange for a small equity stake. Solo founders remain the minority; the programme's own guidance has long favoured teams, on the grounds that a single founder has nobody to argue with. Exceptions are made for founders who have already shipped something, which is the category this one falls into.

What the record does not yet contain is an outcome. A seed round is a bet, not a result, and developer-tooling companies built on top of a fast-moving agent ecosystem are exposed to that ecosystem's next release. The verified facts are the batch, the round, the investors and the product.

Teenage founders usually raise on consumer ideas that adults find charming. Nozomio sells developer infrastructure to engineers, a market with no tolerance for novelty, which is a harder audience for an eighteen-year-old to win.

The route is the story: Almaty to a London-led pre-seed to a San Francisco accelerator, with no degree in between. It is a concrete example of how far the entry point to venture funding has moved from the university campus.
