🇦🇺 Amber Li

She won gold at the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad three years running — and came fourth in the world

Amber Li scored 36 out of 42 for Australia in Prishtina in 2025, solving five of the six problems outright.

Amber Li has won gold at the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad three times: in Tskaltubo in 2024, in Prishtina in 2025 and in Bordeaux in 2026. Her best year was 2025, when she scored 36 out of 42 and finished fourth in the world. She competes for Australia, which despite the competition's name is among the invited teams on its scoreboards.

Fourth in the world

The 2025 olympiad, held in Prishtina, Kosovo, produced her best result. The official scoreboard records 7, 7, 1, 7, 7, 7 across the six problems: five complete solutions, one point on the third, and a total of 36 that placed her fourth in the individual standings.

Problem three is usually the hardest of the first paper, and a competitor who takes seven on the sixth problem — the other designated killer — while dropping the third has not simply run out of time. She solved what most of the field could not, and lost her points on the one question she could not crack in four and a half hours.

Three golds in three years

In 2024, at Tskaltubo in Georgia, she scored 36 for a gold medal and sixth place: 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 1. In 2026, at Bordeaux, she scored 28 — 7, 5, 4, 5, 7, 0 — and finished eighth, again with gold.

The 2026 paper was evidently a harder one. Her score fell by eight points while her rank moved only two places, which is the signature of a paper that compressed the whole field rather than of a competitor who declined. The same scoreboard shows Romania's Aida Mitroi taking gold in tenth place on 26 points — a total that a year earlier would not have reached the top ten at all.

What EGMO is

The European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad runs on the IMO model: six problems over two days, each marked out of seven, a maximum of 42, national teams of four. It was founded to widen the pipeline into elite mathematics, where girls have been persistently underrepresented at national team level. The problems are set to the same standard, and the marking is as unforgiving.

Despite the name it is not confined to Europe. Australia appears on the scoreboards as an invited nation, which means Li has been competing against the strongest teams on the continent that has dominated olympiad mathematics for decades.

Consistency as the achievement

Anyone can have one good morning. Three golds in three consecutive years, on three different papers set by three different problem committees, is evidence of a trained and general capability rather than of a favourable draw.

The scoreboards make that measurable: 36 points, 36 points, 28 points, and ranks of sixth, fourth and eighth. No year in which she fell out of the top ten; no problem set that caught her out completely. Three problem committees tried three different ways to separate the field, and she finished above nearly all of it each time.

What is documented — and what is not

Documented by the official EGMO scoreboards: gold medals in 2024, 2025 and 2026; totals of 36, 36 and 28; ranks of sixth, fourth and eighth; and her problem-by-problem scores in each year.

Not documented in these sources: her age, her birth year, her school, her state, her coaches and her plans. The scoreboards publish names, countries, scores and medals, and this page adds nothing that they do not contain.
