🇺🇸 Amber K Luo

Third in America's oldest high school research competition, in a year that awarded $1.8 million.

Amber K Luo's name sits at number three on the Society for Science's 2022 top ten. The molecular biology behind it was never posted beside it.

Amber K Luo placed third in the 2022 Regeneron Science Talent Search, the research competition for American high school students run by Society for Science. She is listed behind Christine Ye and Victor Cai on the Society's published top ten for that year. Forty finalists competed and shared $1.8 million, but no project title appears against her name.

Third on the 2022 list

The Society for Science page for the 2022 Regeneron Science Talent Search publishes a ranked top ten and nothing more discursive: Christine Ye first, Victor Cai second, Amber Luo third, then Daniel Larsen, Neil Chowdhury, Aseel Rawashdeh, Pravalika Gayatri Putalapattu, Neil Rathi, Amara Orth and Luke Robitaille.

The same page records that forty finalists took part and that $1.8 million was awarded. It does not print project titles, schools or individual prize sums, referring readers instead to a finalist book and a press release. Luo's research field is given in the record behind this page as molecular biology; the Society's own listing does not confirm even that.

What the competition demands

The Science Talent Search is not a fair in the ordinary sense. Entrants submit an original research report, usually the product of a year or more of work, often carried out in a university or hospital laboratory alongside a working researcher, together with essays and a school record. A first round produces three hundred scholars; forty of those become finalists and travel to Washington.

Finals week is an examination rather than a display. Panels of scientists interview each finalist not only on the submitted project but on the science around it, testing whether the student can think outside the boundary of their own experiment. The Society's 2020 page shows the ratio involved: forty finalists chosen from 1,993 entrants.

What third place is worth

The Society published the full ladder for the 2020 competition: $250,000 for first, $175,000 for second, $150,000 for third, descending to $40,000 for tenth, with every finalist guaranteed at least $25,000. On that scale a third place is life-changing money awarded on the strength of teenage research.

The 2022 page does not repeat those figures, giving only the $1.8 million aggregate, so the exact sum attached to Luo's placing is not confirmed by the sources used here. What the aggregate does establish is that the competition's scale had not shrunk: $1.8 million across forty finalists averages $45,000 a head.

Molecular biology at eighteen

The field recorded for Luo, molecular biology, is the most heavily represented discipline in the modern Science Talent Search, and the reason is structural. Sequencing and gene-editing tools became cheap enough in the 2010s that a supervised high school student in a university laboratory can generate genuine, publishable data inside a summer, in a way that is far harder in, say, particle physics.

That accessibility carries a standing criticism of the competition: that access to a research laboratory, and therefore to a mentor with a bench and a budget, is distributed unevenly. The Society's answer over the past decade has been to widen the entry pool and to guarantee every finalist a substantial award. The debate is real, and it is worth stating alongside any individual result rather than in place of it.

What is documented, and what is not

Firm: Amber K Luo placed third in the 2022 Regeneron Science Talent Search; the Society for Science top ten names her in that position, behind Christine Ye and Victor Cai; forty finalists competed; $1.8 million was awarded across the competition.

Not documented, in the sources used here: the title or subject of her research, her school, her home town, her age, the exact prize she received, and what she has studied or published since March 2022. She also appears in some listings simply as Amber Luo, which is the form the Society uses, and the middle initial should not be treated as evidence of a second person.
