🇮🇳 Akshay Raj

Mangalore'daki St Aloysius Lisesi'nde öğrenciydi.

Technically and Naturally Growing India

The title states the argument: a country developing along two tracks at once, technological and natural, without one consuming the other. At 14 Raj was old enough to draw a thesis rather than a wish, and the doodle answers the prompt with a position rather than an image.

That is the difference age makes in this competition. The youngest winners tend to offer a single vivid idea; older entrants can hold a tension inside one drawing. Growth that is both technical and natural is a more sophisticated answer to what India should become than most of what the prompt produces.

108,000 entries, the second year

Google India put the field at more than 108,000 entries, in only the second running of the Indian competition. That is a remarkable number for a contest with no entry fee, no prize money stated in the announcement and a two-year history.

The scale is explained by the reach of Indian school networks and by the nature of the reward. Schools enter as institutions, which turns a voluntary art competition into a classroom activity across thousands of schools at once, and the prize — the national homepage for a day — needs no explanation to a child.

My dream for India

The 2010 theme asked entrants for their dream for the country. It is a prompt with an obvious political edge and an obvious safe answer, and what children do with it is revealing: the entries divide between infrastructure, cleanliness, education and the environment.

Raj's doodle refused the choice by taking two of those at once. Announcing it on Children's Day, 14 November, Google India described a 14-year-old from Mangalore winning the second Doodle4Google competition — a headline that led with the age and the city, as these announcements almost always do.

Where Akshay Raj is now

No source used here reports anything about him after the 2010 announcement. His later schooling, studies and work are not documented in this record.

He would be in his late twenties now. The competition does not follow its winners, and no subsequent coverage appears in the material used for this page, so anything circulating about his career does not come from these sources.

What winning at fourteen is worth

The Indian Doodle 4 Google is judged across the whole school system, which means an older entrant competes against small children whose ideas are often fresher and whose drawings are often more charming. Winning as a teenager therefore requires the execution to carry the idea, because the novelty of a very young artist is not available as an advantage.

The reward is exposure on a scale nothing else offers a schoolchild: a national homepage for a day, in a country with one of the largest internet populations in the world. For a fourteen-year-old in Mangalore in 2010, it was a bigger audience than any Indian gallery could have provided.
