МАТЕМАТИЧЕСКАЯ ОЛИМПИАДА

🇯🇵 Yuta Takaya

The year with no perfect paper

The 58th olympiad produced an outcome the competition sees only occasionally: no 42s at all. The maximum available was six problems at seven points each, and the best anyone managed was 35. Takaya was one of three contestants to reach it, alongside Amirmojtaba Sabour of Iran and Hoang Huu Quoc Huy of Vietnam.

All three arrived there by the same route. The official rows are identical: 7, 7, 0, 7, 7, 7. Five complete solutions and a zero on the problem set in the hardest position on the first paper. In 2017 the leaderboard was not sorted by who scored most on the decisive question; it was sorted by who had been flawless on everything else.

Japan in Rio

Japan's results in 2017 show Takaya well ahead of his teammates. He took 35 and rank one; Naoki Kuroda scored 25 for gold at rank thirty-six, exactly on that year's gold cut-off; Soji Kubota took 22 and Shuho Kanda 19, both silver.

A ten-point gap between a team's first and second contestant is a sizeable one at this level, where the difference between consecutive ranks is often a single mark of partial credit. It puts Takaya's result in its national context: he was not the strongest of a uniformly strong squad but the outlier at the top of it.

Japan before and after

The official tables make Japan's continuity at the top of the competition visible across a decade. Takaya shared first in the world in 2017. In 2023 Japan hosted the olympiad itself, in Chiba. In 2025 Satoshi Kano was one of five contestants to score a perfect 42. In 2026 Shinjiro Hamakawa took gold at joint fourteenth with 36 points.

Those are different contestants facing different problem sets, which is what makes the pattern worth noting. A single first place can be a cohort's good year. A record of high finishes across nearly a decade describes a selection and training pipeline that keeps producing them.

What the table records — and what it does not

The firm facts are the organisers' own and require no corroboration: the country, the six problem scores, the total of 35, the shared rank of one, the gold medal, the year and the host city. Everything on this page's fact list comes from that single authoritative row.

The row is also all there is. It carries no age, no date of birth, no school, no city and no photograph. Nothing in the sources gathered here records how Takaya qualified for the Japanese team, what he studied afterwards, or whether he competed again. Those absences are set out rather than filled in.

What a zero on the hardest problem means

Olympiad marking is unusually unforgiving at the extremes. A seven means a complete and correct argument; a zero on a problem of that difficulty usually means the contestant did not find the key idea at all, rather than that the work was careless. Three of the strongest young mathematicians in the world producing the same zero says more about the problem than about them.

It also explains why the 2017 result is quoted the way it is. In a year with several perfect scores, joint first place means sharing a ceiling. In 2017 it meant reaching a ceiling that the organisers had set above everyone's head, and getting closer to it than 612 other contestants managed.
