КВАНТОВЫЕ ВЫЧИСЛЕНИЯ

🇺🇸 Yale Fan

В восемнадцать лет он получил $50 000, показав, где квантовые компьютеры превосходят наши текущие машины.

Intel ISEF 2010

The award

Intel's announcement of 14 May 2010 lists Fan among the fair's top winners, with a $50,000 prize for work in physics and astronomy. The release describes the project in a single line: he demonstrated the advantages of quantum computing in performing difficult computations.

That sentence is the whole of the public technical description in the source used here. It does not say which computational problems he examined, which quantum model he worked in, or whether the work was theoretical or simulated, so this page does not characterise it further.

The fair in 2010

Intel ISEF 2010 was held in San Jose, California. Intel's figures for the week: 1,611 young scientists, selected from 539 affiliated fairs across 59 countries and regions, competing for more than $4 million in prizes.

Finalists do not apply directly. Each has already won a regional or national affiliated fair, which makes the competition a pyramid rather than an open field — more than five hundred qualifying events feeding roughly sixteen hundred places.

More than $4 million in prizes was distributed across the week in 2010, which is why a high-school science fair produced a five-figure award for an eighteen-year-old. The money came from Intel's sponsorship and from hundreds of special-award organisations that judge alongside the main categories.

The top of the 2010 field

The Gordon E. Moore Award, worth $75,000, went that year to Amy Chyao, 16, of Richardson, Texas, for a photosensitizer for photodynamic cancer therapy. Fan's $50,000 award sat immediately below it.

The contrast between the two projects illustrates the judging problem at the top of the fair. One was applied chemistry aimed at a cancer treatment; the other was quantum computation. Judges — in 2009 the fair used around 900 of them, all with doctorates or equivalent experience — rank across fields that share no common yardstick.

What Intel said

Paul Otellini, then Intel's president and chief executive, gave the fair its official summary that year. "The 1,600 youth from around the world who attended this week's Intel International Science and Engineering Fair showed me that the next generation of scientific and technological innovation is exciting and thriving," he said.

Intel's sponsorship of ISEF, which ran for nearly two decades, is the reason prizes of this size existed at a high-school science fair at all. The fair itself is organised by the Society for Science, and the naming sponsor has since changed.

What is documented — and what is not

The Intel press release establishes Fan's name, age, home town, category, prize and the one-line project description. It does not name his school, his mentor or any laboratory he worked with.

Nor does it follow him beyond May 2010. No source used here reports where he studied afterwards, whether the quantum computing work was published or extended, or what he is doing now. His birth year is inferred from being 18 that May and is therefore approximate. Those are limits of the record, not statements about his career.

What can be said with confidence is the shape of the result rather than its content: a physics project on quantum computation, judged by specialists, placed among the three best entries at the largest pre-college science competition in the world. The substance of the work remains outside the public record used here.
