The two results

His 2025 scoresheet reads 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 0: five problems solved completely, nothing on the sixth, for 35 points and a share of twenty-seventh place among 630 contestants. The 2026 line reads 7, 7, 4, 7, 7, 1, for 33 points and twenty-third place among 666.

The pattern is the one strong contestants show most often. The first, second, fourth and fifth problems, the accessible four, were closed in both years without losing a mark. The two hardest problems on the two papers, the third and the sixth, took every point he dropped.

Gold from a small team

Every country at the olympiad may send six contestants, whatever its size. Bosnia and Herzegovina sends six, from a population of a few million, into a competition whose upper reaches are usually occupied by much larger national programmes.

Against that, two gold medals in successive years is a considerable result. Medals are capped at half the field and awarded in roughly a one to two to three ratio of gold to silver to bronze, so gold goes to about one contestant in twelve. Janković was inside that band twice, against two different papers.

What the scores mean across years

Raw totals are not comparable between olympiads, because each year's problems are set afresh by an international jury and can be markedly harder or easier. Thirty-five was worth joint twenty-seventh in 2025; thirty-three was worth twenty-third in 2026, in a larger field.

Rank is the stable measure. Twenty-seventh of 630 and twenty-third of 666 both place him in roughly the top four per cent of competing school mathematicians worldwide, which is where the gold medals come from.

How the competition is run

The olympiad has been held annually since 1959 and now gathers more than a hundred national teams. Contestants sit two papers on consecutive mornings, three problems each, four and a half hours per paper, with every problem marked out of seven by coordinators reading the written proof.

Partial credit is why scoresheets like Janković's have fours and ones in them. A four means an argument most of the way home; a one means a usable idea and no more. Nothing is awarded for an answer that is not proved.

The competition is also an individual one. The country tables published alongside the results are unofficial sums of six scores, and no contestant competes as a team in any formal sense. That distinction matters for a small delegation, because an individual gold is worth exactly as much from Sarajevo as from Shanghai.

Documented by the competition's official database: both years, both host cities, the field sizes, Bosnia and Herzegovina as his country, the per-problem scores, the totals, the ranks and the two gold medals.

Not documented: his age or date of birth, which is why this page gives no birth year; his school or city; his national selection results; and anything about him since the 2026 olympiad. His surname is written Janković in the official results and is often rendered Jankovic in English coverage.
