A perfect paper

NEET-UG is the single national entrance examination for medical study in India: one paper, one rank list, and a place at a medical college for those near the top of it. Nothing about its design invites a maximum score, and a candidate who returns one makes national news. In 2021 Kutteri returned one, 720 marks out of 720, for All India Rank 1.

The second half of his record is stranger than the first. He also cleared JEE Main, the engineering entrance, at the 99.9 percentile, and sat the KVPY, the national science aptitude scholarship examination. Indian teenagers are usually sorted into the medical stream or the engineering stream by Class 11 and prepare accordingly. Kutteri prepared across both and topped one of them outright.

Four hours, and no timetable

The part of his story that has kept it in circulation is the method, because it contradicts the folklore. The standard account of an Indian entrance topper involves a fourteen-hour day, a wall chart and a coaching hostel. Kutteri told India.com he averaged about four hours of study a day, five on his best days.

Instead of a strict daily timetable he chose a flexible method: each day he set himself one small goal, and how he reached it was his own business. His routine changed often. Some days he was highly productive; on others he found it hard to study at all. 'There were many days when I couldn't complete what I planned,' he is quoted as saying, 'but I didn't feel discouraged.' He relaxed by binge-watching comedy on Netflix and Prime Video, which is not a detail that appears in most topper interviews.

It is worth being precise about what that does and does not prove. Four focused hours sustained for two years is a great deal of study. What the account undercuts is not the volume of work but the theatre around it: the timetable, the hostel, the performance of exhaustion.

A house with no doctors in it

Kutteri lives in Hyderabad with his parents, a younger brother and his grandparents; the family's roots are in Kerala. India.com notes that no close family member is a doctor, which is unusual at the top of the NEET list, where medical households are heavily represented and where the choice of stream is often settled before the child has any say in it.

The report does not state his parents' occupations, and this page does not guess at them. What it does establish is that the decision to sit the medical entrance was not an inheritance.

What is known since

Here the record stops. The June 2025 profile used for this page does not say which medical college he joined, what year of study he has reached, or what he intends to specialise in. It is written as a study-method story rather than a where-are-they-now, and it carries the limits of that choice.

One caveat belongs on the headline figure. The source used for this page records Kutteri's result as All India Rank 1 with a perfect 720, and says nothing about whether the top place that year was shared with other candidates on the same score. A maximum mark is, by definition, reachable by more than one person, and the research file behind this page flags the question as unresolved. Until a rank list or a contemporaneous report settles it, the claim to hold is the score.
