SPELLING BEE

🇺🇸 Irving Belz

The 1951 final

The Daytona Beach Morning Journal reported that a Memphis boy had won the 24th National Spelling Bee. Belz was 13 and had reached Washington through the Memphis Press-Scimitar, one of the sponsoring newspapers that ran regional bees and paid for their champion's trip.

The contest went twenty-six rounds. The runner-up missed cuisine, and Belz then spelled insouciant to finish it. Both words are French borrowings, which is where the 1951 list had evidently arrived by the twenty-sixth round.

The 24th bee

The headline's numbering is a useful anchor. By 1951 the national competition had been held twenty-four times, a count that reflects both its origins in the 1920s and the years lost to the Second World War, when the bee was suspended.

The Times-News of Hendersonville followed the story on the same day with a different angle: the spelling bee king was leaving for New York. Champions of the period were routinely sent on to television and press appearances in the days after the final, which is why the follow-up stories are about travel rather than about spelling.

Insouciant

Insouciant entered English from French in the eighteenth century and keeps its French shape: the silent t, the ci where an English ear expects sh, the ou for a sound English would spell with a double o. Nothing about it can be worked out from English rules.

That is precisely why it ends bees. A speller who has studied how French adjectives are naturalised has a route to it. A speller who is reasoning from the sound alone has none, and after twenty-six rounds the words remaining are all of that kind.

What a long bee looked like in 1951

The competition was held in Washington over a day or two, with judges, a pronouncer and an unabridged dictionary as final authority. Regional champions arrived from across the country, each sent and funded by the newspaper that had run their qualifying bee.

Coverage was handled by the wire services and reprinted nationally the following morning. That single cycle is why the surviving record of a 1951 champion is a few hundred words long, and why almost nothing is known about most of them afterwards.

Twenty-six rounds also says something about the field. A bee that deep has eliminated every speller working from memory alone, and the competitors still standing are the ones who have learned the machinery of English borrowing. In 1951 that came down to two boys and a run of French words, and the title turned on which of them had studied the French endings more closely.
