What Ixtlilton does

The tool answers one question: does this person need to see a doctor. It puts a series of questions to the user and, on the answers, identifies which of 21 diseases may be present. It is aimed at people in remote areas, where the distance to a clinic makes an unnecessary journey costly and a necessary one easy to postpone.

The design decision that matters most is that it works offline after it has been downloaded. An AI medical tool that requires a live connection is useless in precisely the places it is meant to serve. Building it to run on a device without a signal is the difference between a demonstration and something a person in the Veracruz highlands can actually use. The name is taken from Ixtlilton, a healing deity in Nahua tradition; the Totonac region around Papantla is one of Mexico's most historically indigenous areas.

The prize

The Global Student Prize, run by Chegg.org alongside the Varkey Foundation's Global Teacher Prize, awards $100,000 to one exceptional student a year. The 2024 field was more than 11,000 nominations and applications from 176 countries.

Olazarán said she would use the money to create and install a STEM classroom in Veracruz. That is a notably unglamorous plan for a $100,000 individual prize, and it is consistent with the rest of her record: she has spoken at the Mexican Senate about including STEM careers in the school curriculum.

Before the prize

The 2024 award was not her first. She won the national Robotics Competition in 2021 in the Home Care Challenge category, at state and then national level. In 2022 she received the STEM Talent Award, the National Student Prize Mexico. In 2023 she took two silver medals at the RoboRAVE World Championship.

With her Nakú Robotics team she also took part virtually in a NASA Houston Space Center conference on artificial intelligence and space education. The prize page lists her as studying Information Technology and Digital Business Engineering at Anáhuac University Veracruz, on the Xalapa campus.

What is documented, and what is not

Firm: her age, seventeen; her home town, Papantla de Olarte in Veracruz; the Global Student Prize 2024, its $100,000 value and the field of more than 11,000 applicants from 176 countries; Ixtlilton, its purpose, its 21 diseases and its offline operation; her robotics competition record; her Senate appearance; and her stated plan to build a STEM classroom in Veracruz.

Not documented in these sources: her exact date of birth, so the birth year here is derived from her reported age; who else worked on Ixtlilton, which the prize page describes her as having helped create; whether the tool has been clinically validated or deployed; and her family. Mexican coverage has also associated her with a Conalep technical college in Papantla, while the prize page names Anáhuac University Veracruz, and the two are not reconciled in this material.

Why an offline tool is the interesting part

There is no shortage of student projects that put a medical questionnaire behind a machine-learning model. The constraint Olazarán designed around is the one those projects usually ignore: the users with the least access to doctors also have the least access to bandwidth, and a cloud-dependent tool inverts its own purpose.

The honest caveat belongs alongside it. A tool that screens for 21 diseases from a questionnaire is a triage aid, not a diagnosis, and nothing in the sources used here establishes that it has been validated against clinical outcomes or put into service by a health authority. What the record establishes is that a seventeen-year-old in Veracruz identified a real constraint, built for it, and convinced a panel sifting 11,000 applications that the result was the best of them.
